It is important for marine engineers to hone its mechanical or electrical skill to an environment where it has all the essential machine and tools needed.
An engineer must have not just theoretical knowledge but experience in tangible and real tools that are frequently used on board. Whether it may be lathe machine or measuring tools like a micrometer, a good marine engineer must know and familiarize its tools even before embarking a marine vessel.
In this semester, the marine engineering laboratory in Mindanao situated at SJIT Maritime Education and Training (SMET) Campus will be functional. It will be commission not just for students. This lab will be comprise of variety of tools and different machines that will be used by the engine cadets. Also, some shipboard machineries like a main engine and different auxiliary engines are planned to be installed inside.
SMET’s marine lab has the largest size among all the marine engineering laboratory in the region and perhaps one of the largest in the country. This ginormous two-story building filled with marine machineries will help the students be equipped with knowledge and skill that will be useful as they progress on their chosen career.
To become a great seafarer and a great engineer, one must master the basics. To master the basics, one must have the right tools and place for learning. With this new and advanced laboratory, learning for the cadets will be efficient. The future is bright for the school and its future marine engine officers. But before that, let us start and get cranking!
