On August 7, 2024, Swire Shipping, a prominent company specializing in logistics operations, visited the Saint Joseph Institute of Technology - Maritime and Training Institute (SMET). The visit was led by the Anchorswire Ship Management (ASSM) Corporation President, Mr. Eduardo Pertiera, accompanied by Mr. Rolando Villanueva, Recruitment and Training Manager of ASSM Corporation, and Mr. Isaias Despi Jr., the Fleet Trainer of the said corporation. Prominent visitors observed the competency and suitability of each facility in meeting global standards of the maritime industry.
Chief Mate Samuel Lim, OIC-Dean of the Maritime Academy, and Mr. Nicole Joy C. Salas, Executive Vice President of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, warmly welcomed the visitors from Swire Shipping.
The institution presents each facility's qualities and standards, such as the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, integrated Engine Simulator, ECDIS, GMDSS, and ARPA/RADAR simulators, giving credibility to how they meet the demands of the industry. Other facilities that quantify competency, such as the swimming pool and the sailing program, were also introduced.
An interview was also conducted with one deck cadet who passed the examination from the said shipping company. This visit was the second time this year, a sign of a growing partnership between the institution and the shipping company. It aligns with the institution's goal of producing qualified seafarers to venture onto international seagoing vessels.
