Deck and Engine cadets of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology Maritime Education Training (SMET) campus participated in the 48-hour watchkeeping exercise as part of the maritime education curriculum.
The said exercise was held at the SMET Bridge and Engine Simulator last November 27, 2018. The simulation for both deck and engine cadets started at exactly 0800H on November 27 and ended at 1200H on November 29, 2018. The cadets were group accordingly. Each group were composed of 3 to 4 members, 1 third year, 1 second year, and 2 freshmen respectively. There was a 3-hour interval in each group.
The exercise was headed by the Maritime Dean, Captain Nestor Almero and facilitated by faculties and Teekay CAR cadets. The objectives of the said exercise were to apply the learnings of the students and to be familiarized with the works and equipment found aboard the ship.
“It was a good experience. It will help bring awareness and it is a good practice to all the students because they will know what to do during watch keeping and because of this experience they already know how to make log book reports.” Teekay CAR Cadet Theo Bernales said after being asked for his remarks regarding the successful watch keeping exercise.
The exercise is expected to happen in the forthcoming years.
