"True enjoyment comes from activity of the mind and exercise of the body."
Since school can sometimes be a stressful environment, doing some body movements could mean a lot. With all those school projects, assignments, requirements and tasks, one should sustain a strong physique in order to last a day still with a smile. That's where daily dose of calisthenics should be taken!
Calisthenics are exercises consisting of a variety of gross motor movements such as running, standing, grasping, pushing, etc. — often performed rhythmically and with minimal equipment, so essentially, body weight exercises. These exercises are just easy to execute because these do not include rigid movements.
This practice has been a norm for the FLP cadets in SMET campus. This is an easy way of maintaining the body fit such that building the upper and lower body strength. Needless to say, calisthenics gives lots of benefits to a person. This helps the mind to be refreshed and be active for the rest of the activities you'll be doing every day. It can tone and build muscles to make them lean and improve your endurance.
Normally, this practice is conducted early in the morning prior to breakfast from Monday to Friday. Cadets are expected to be at the area of exercise exactly 5:00 am. A marcher, an assigned person leads the whole duration of exercise. The calisthenics usually contains 5 to 6 types of exercises which are done in two cycles. Proper execution is monitored to avoid accidents such as cramps and body pains.
The main purpose of this activity is to prepare every maritime student for their pre-shipboard training requirement and very strict medical requirements after acquiring the three years of academics in school. They will undergo basic training like personal safety & social responsibility, firefighting, first aid, survival techniques and other company specific training that will not surprise their bodies since they are used to rigorous physical activities. Additionally, calisthenics will help them prepare physically, mentally and emotionally prior boarding on board the ship where a strong soul, a firm body and stable mindset is needed to last in a maritime industry.
