As a department they will strive to offer opportunities for students to challenge themselves, understand their abilities, become independent learners and confident individuals with lifelong involvement in Physical Education.

Let us begin with some introductions:

Whole School Co-ordinator of Sport and ES Head of PE: Mr Harron

  • Mr Harron joins us from College Seoul where he was the whole college Director of Sport. He was born in Sheffield in the UK before growing up in Swaziland as a young child. Mr Harron has an honours degree and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Physical Education from Loughborough University. He previously taught PE at two schools in England, one of which a specialist Sports College before moving to the island of Borneo, where he enjoyed being the Head of PE and Sport at Kinabalu International School. Mr Harron is passionate about helping to nurture compassionate young people and believes PE and sport helps children adopt a positive lifestyle where they develop essential life skills. Through sport, we can encourage leadership, foster respect for one another, promote fair play, inspire determination and develop resilience. In his free time, Mr Harron loves to play sport and take part in outdoor and adventurous activities especially rugby, martial arts, hiking and scuba diving. He also enjoys cooking, travelling and meeting people from different cultures. Mr Harron is excited to see what his third year has in store!

Head of High School PE: Mr O'Connor

  • Mr O'Connor joins us from the Modern English School, Cairo where he has been a Physical Education Teacher and Head of House for the past three years. He graduated from the University of Bedfordshire in 2012 with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status. He then taught at Dereham Neatherd High School, close to his hometown of Norwich, Norfolk, for two years before embarking on his journey to Egypt. Mr O'Connor’s passion is promoting leadership through sport by encouraging young people to harness their enthusiasm and talents in order to build a positive athletic community. At his previous school, he led the Athletic Mentor Programme, a successful endeavour which enabled passionate young people to take leadership roles in school through athletic support and coaching. Outside of work, Mr O'Connor does not stay far from sports; in fact, most days of the week he is involved in a number of club teams where he enjoys playing football, basketball, table tennis and more recently, golf. Mr O'Connor is looking forward to his third year in Malaysia!

Teacher of High School PE: Miss Battle

  • Miss Battle joined us in 2020 from St Angela’s Ursuline School in London where she was a Physical Education Teacher and The Duke of Edinburgh Award coordinator. She graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education from The University of Wales, Trinity Saint David and gained her PGCE at The University of East London. During her undergraduate studies she embarked on a Erasmus year at University of North Carolina, USA where her love of education combined with traveling began. Miss Battle is passionate about using Physical Education and sport as a means to develop young people in a holistic way by encouraging creativity, team work and problem solving. Outside of work she continues her love of sport by playing Netball and more recently training for Triathlons and marathons.

Head of Swimming (Whole School) Ms Zyanne Lee

  • Zyanne has also recently graduated from university and is working as a part time swim instructor. She has an extensive background in aquatics, particularly in the areas of synchronized swimming and water aerobics. Zyanne has competed at the top level as a National Synchronised Swimming Athlete for 12 years. She will also assist the swimming squads and will teach the curriculum swimming programme.

High School PE (Head of Year 8): Mr Hussain

  • Mr. Hussain joins us in 2019 from Cairo English School in Egypt where he was the Head of PE and Director of Sports. His previous international experience was at Fairview International School Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Majid has an honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science from Leeds Metropolitan University and a PGCE and Masters in Education from Sheffield Hallam University. His passion is to promote and develop confidence for students across a variety of physical activities, so they can stay active for the rest of their lives. Outside of work, Majid plays in a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Muay Thai and Tennis.

Head of Elementary PE: Ms Chadwick

  • Ms Chadwick joins us from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where she completed her first international teaching position as a whole school PE teacher. Before this she taught at an outstanding secondary school in Shropshire where she worked as a PE teacher for three years. Miss Chadwick is an all round sports woman with particular interests in Athletics, Netball and Rounders in which she still competes regularly. Her passion for Athletics at school led her to compete at county level in sprinting and shot putt. She continues to keep fit in the gym and has recently taken up triathlons. She completed her first sprint distance in Danang, Vietnam in May 2019 where she came 2nd female in her age group! She looks forward to continuing this hobby in Malaysia. She believes her energy and enthusiasm towards sport and physical activity gives the students an outstanding role model who will motivate them towards an active, healthy lifestyle. She believes every child has a talent within a sport or activity and she believes she can help guide them towards a pathway of their choice. She has successfully led Netball and Athletics teams to victory in her previous schools and hopes to make a difference by further improving the quality of sport and physical activities offered at SJII Malaysia.

Swim Coaches (Whole School): David, Shan and Keith

  • Coach David graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering with a full scholarship in Taylor's University. David has always had a deep passion for swimming and he decided to have a career path as a certified swim coach. During his swimming career, his perseverance and passion had led him to represent Malaysia in several international competitions. He has been teaching swimming for a decade. He last worked in Garden International School, KL and has brought up several rising stars. During his free time he likes to travel and do photography.

  • Coach Shan was a competitive swimmer and has represented the state team for 6 years. She is a certified swim coach and has passion for coaching aspiring young swimmers. Shan’s personal activities in recent years expanded to include aquathlon, open water and running races with podium achievements. Shan holds a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition and Dietetics from International Medical University and sports science level 1 certificate. Previously, she was a sports dietitian at the National Sports Institute of Malaysia, working closely with the elite national athletes as their dietitian, specialising in water sports such as diving, sailing, swimming and artistic swimming. She led the sports science team to serve the National Sailing Team and has served as a dietitian to 3 past major multi-sport games i.e. 2018 Asian Games, 2017 Southeast Asian Games and 2017 Para ASEAN Games. She is also a certified ISAK Level 1 Anthropometrist and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) Accredited Advisor.
