Higher Education Talk on how to write successful Statement of Purpose

An information session organized for the final year students, on how to write a Successful Statement of Purpose for overseas higher education application process by Dr Guru Tej, Director, Wisdom ED, Mangaluru on 14th January 2021.

He began his speech with asking question, what is a statement of purpose? It is an application essay a student applying for a post-graduate programme at a foreign university is required to write in order to be admitted to the programme.

He said, An SOP is rightly called a personal statement because it is a statement prepared by the applicants to give an indication to the admissions committee what type of a person they are and to express their suitability for a particular programme that they wish to apply. An SOP, being a personal account of the applicant’s academic performances and wishes, reveals the applicant’s attitude.

If the statement is written by someone, the candidate’s personal touch may not be reflected in the application essay. This is why it is considered unethical on the part of the applicant to ask someone to prepare the document. The personal document can be given to someone for editing.

A good SOP stands out and attracts the admissions committee which wades through hundreds of applications. The 8 Ps that make an SOP special are personal touch, purpose, passion, preparedness, potential, planning, plain English and positivity. Session ended with clarifying the queries.

Overview of Education Abroad

The Office of Collaborations is organized a virtual talk on Overview of Education Abroad-giving an idea of courses, career opportunities and changes that are taking place during this time of pandemic. The speaker of the event is Ms Priya K, Branch Manager, Planet Education, Udupi.

The talk was organized on 6th October 2020 for the Engineering, MCA and MBA final year students. The talk was conducted to give the student an insight to select higher education Abroad in this pandemic time.

We know the immeasurable value of studying abroad. But, we also recognize that the recent outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) will impact many students' plans to look abroad for higher education opportunities.

You may be confused or worried about what COVID-19 means for you and your study abroad plans. We wanted to get an idea of how other students are faring in order to help you make decisions about your own study plans for the future.

Based on the 2,500 responses to our recent survey, here are some interesting statistics about how COVID-19 has impacted prospective and current students  studying abroad.

Just under half of students would be interested in an international education online. Given that a vast majority of our student database tend to enquire about study abroad opportunities where they physically go abroad, these responses demonstrate a remarkable interest in studying abroad virtually. The significant interest from potential students in studying abroad online speaks to the significance of universities' existing distance learning options. Furthermore, it may illustrate a potential uptick in distance learning applications in the future.

Students currently abroad continue to prioritize their learning, with a whopping 68.2% of them wishing to continue their education either online or with virtual classrooms. Universities with the capabilities to offer online learning should consider how much value international students place on their study abroad experiences - no matter where they're located.

Higher Education Abroad

The Office of Collaborations is organized a virtual talk on higher education abroad for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, focusing on various options and opportunities to the students on 30th September 2020 at 4:00 Pm to 5:00 Pm. The Speaker of the talk was Mr Shijo Yeshudas, Marketing Manager, IDP Mangaluru.

Studying abroad is a life-changing experience and so, before students plunge into the first destination that pops in your mind, sit back and research. It is crucial to weigh all the pros and cons of a country where students plan to further your career.

That is your foundation to start with – identify your course of preference by listing down your interests and strengths. Research extensively on the modules, program and its duration offered for your preferred subject. And while students at it, ensure to explore employment prospects and long-term benefits as well.

Understand the industries that are open for you to explore employment opportunities once you’ve completed your program. Take into account the countries that have maximum avenues for students undertaking your chosen course. Check how strong is the destination in your industry base and if any level of industrial training is available.

For instance, if you wish to make it big in civil engineering, New Zealand is one of the best destinations for you. With the current expansion of construction projects across the country, there is a growing demand for civil engineers with handsome perks here. Ireland is great for students in the healthcare and pharmaceuticals industry and Australia is the country to be if you are seeking research opportunities.

Different destinations have different educational structures, which may or may not be in sync with your thought process. Check for the teaching pedagogy followed in the classrooms. For instance, a lot of universities add weightage to practical training over theoretical concepts. Do you think such an approach would work for you? Would you be comfortable working on research papers and assignments every week?

Always look for the entry requirements for the programs available in your desired destination. Does it offer a program at the level you wish to take entry in? Is it a diploma program or a degree? Understand your preference and select accordingly. For instance, several colleges in Canada offer a postgraduate diploma instead of a master’s degree. Similarly, the UK offers two kinds of master’s – taught and research.

It is essential to consider the overall expense involved in studying at a particular destination. When calculating your costs, don’t forget to consider ancillary expenses such as accommodation, utilities, transportation, etc. Consider the duration of your course as that’ll majorly affect your overall cost of studying abroad. For instance, masters in the UK and Ireland are offered for just one year whereas masters in other countries like Canada and Australia can take up to two years.

Did you know that the academic year in universities abroad differ from the ones in India? Consider your current situation – does it allow you to gather everything and apply for the upcoming intake? Applying to a university requires collating all your documents (such as Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation, Curriculum Vitae, Transcripts, etc.), ensure that you have all this in place before your chosen intake begins. If you don’t have enough time for all these formalities, consider going for the next intake.

Our chosen course should be able to help you grow professionally and put you in a state where you can find employment. Consider a destination that offers multiple employment opportunities for your course. For instance, if you’re getting a masters computer science, the US will offer you endless avenues. After all, it is home to tech hubs such as San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Silicon Valley.

Check for the visa entry requirements of the destination you are interested in. Each country has a different set of rules to abide by, and sometimes visa processing may take more time than expected. Also, visa processing costs vary for each country. If you’d require, our counselors can help you understand the visa process with ease.

As an Indian student who’ll be spending a lot of money, effort and time, it is natural to calculate the return on investment (ROI). Does the destination offer you the kind of return you’d want on your investment? Does it make you job ready? If you are planning to immigrate to another country, reflect upon the opportunities and monetary benefit. Consider the value of your degree back home especially if you intend to return back. Students going for niche courses must also ponder upon this aspect.

Higher Education in Germany

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on higher education in Germany for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, focusing on various options and opportunities to the students on 9th October 2020 at 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The Speaker of the talk was Ms Niketa Dedhia, Principal Consultant, Exponent Consultant Services, USA.

During her talk she said, Germany has become one of the top choices for international students opting to pursue higher studies. Even if students are not taking a single class to learn the German language still they will succeed to earn their degree as they conduct many classes in the English language. International Students in Germany are allowed to work for either 90 full working days or 180 half working days so this is one of the main reason to pursue study in Germany.

In relation to having a large number of universities, Germany offers countless degree courses designed to suit everyone’s interests. As an industrialized country Germany has invested a lot in Engineering universities and today Engineering programs are particularly valued at German universities. However, there are a lot more study programs offered at these universities and in some of them, they are global leaders like medicine and pharmacy.

Based on official recordings in 2018, there are 429 public higher education institution functioning in Germany among which 106 are universities. Some of them have been consistently ranked among the world’s best universities. Students value these universities for the quality of education, hands-on experiences during their studies, opportunities to improve academically during and after studies and most importantly the safe and friendly environment.

Degree issued from a German university is a highly respected and valued qualification all over the world. As an indication of this, German graduates enjoy a high employability in the global job market.

In comparison with other countries, Germany is a safe country. In town or in the countryside, by day or by night, students can move around freely here. To apply for studies few universities are asking for GMAT otherwise IELTS exam is sufficient to get an admission. The talk ended with the questions and answer.

Higher Education in Australia

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on Education Opportunities in Australia for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, on 22nd July 2020 at 12:00 Pm to1:00pm. The Speaker of the talk was Ms Priya K, Branch Manager, Planet Education, Udupi.

She covered the session with below Highlighted topics:

Sandy beaches, deep blue ocean, relaxed living, good weather and barbeques in the sun are just a few of the things that we associate with Australia. But did you know that the country has an internationally respected higher education system? It also has the third highest number of international students in the world, behind only the United States and the UK. All these foreign students can't be wrong so it’s not surprising that Australia is one of the most popular study destinations in the world.

The cost of living is high, so be prepared for the expense. However, Australians love the great outdoors and strolling along the beach or surfing is free. In your study-free hours you can explore a variety of landscapes, from metropolitan cities and coastal idylls to rainforests and the outback. One thing's for certain, you'll never be short of places to explore thanks to the country's 17 world heritage sites.

The country has 43 universities located across state capitals and regional areas, so with some research  bound to find the perfect place to settle. Institutions offer thousands of courses in a range of subjects, from science and humanities to management and engineering. Australia's education structure is similar to that in the UK and can study for Bachelors, Masters and Doctorates.

When it comes to university world rankings Australia has an impressive track record. Seven of the country's institutions feature in the QS world ranking 2019.

The country's oldest research universities comprise the Group of Eight (Go8) including Australian National University, Monash University and the universities of Adelaide, Melbourne, New South Wales, Queensland, Sydney and Western Australia. Melbourne is the most popular student city according to QS Best Student Cities 2018. Three other locations, including Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra make up the top 30, with Perth narrowly missing out in 39th place. The academic year usually starts in February but this can vary depending on your institution and level of study.

Masters degrees

Australian Masters follow a similar format to those in the UK and usually take one or two years to complete. Qualifications awarded from Australian institutions are globally recognised and well respected by employers, standing in good stead upon graduation.

Institutions in the country offer a range of taught and research-based Masters in areas such as creative arts, engineering, health, education and sciences to name just a few. Like in the UK, you'll be able to study a Masters of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc). Courses focus on either traditional coursework (taught courses) or independent research (research courses), or a combination of both.

In Australia you’ll also be able to study a 'Change of direction' Masters - for students looking to change subject pathways and a 'Professional development' Masters - for students looking to further their careers through additional training.

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on Get Familiar with computer delivered IELTS for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, on 23rd July 2020 at 12:00 Pm to 1:00pm. The Speaker of the talk was Mr Aftab Hamdi, IELTS- Operations Executive – Karnataka.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration.

Why is IELTS important?

More than 10,000 organisations globally trust IELTS, so when students take the test they can be confident that it is recognised by educational institutions, employers, governments and professional bodies around the world. As one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing 30 years ago, IELTS continues to set the standard for English language testing today. Governments in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom use IELTS to process immigration applications.

How does IELTS work?

IELTS has been developed by some of the world’s leading language assessment experts and will test the full range of English skills needed for success in your new job or study placement abroad.

You’ll be assessed on the following elements:

Choosing the right test: There are two IELTS tests available – IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. The test students choose should be based on what it is they want to do.

IELTS Academic - measures whether your level of English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment. It reflects aspects of academic language and evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training or studying.

IELTS General Training - measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations. With computer-delivered IELTS there are more test dates available, test takers can choose IELTS at a time convenient for them, and they will receive their results in 3 to 5 days.

If students choose to take computer-delivered IELTS, they will take the Listening, Reading and Writing test using a computer. All aspects of the test are identical to paper-based IELTS, including:

In the computer-delivered Listening test, the timings are slightly different from the paper-based test. This is because the paper-based test requires users to transfer answers to an answer sheet. This step becomes redundant when answering directly on a computer.

Before the start of each part of the Listening test you will have some time to read the questions. After the end of each part of the Listening test you will have some time to review your answers. At the end of the Listening test, you will have 2 minutes to check your answers. The timing of the Listening test is between 30 – 34 minutes. This session ended with Q&A.

Higher Education in Canada

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on Kick Start your career in Canada for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, on 21st July 2020 at 12:00 Pm to 1:00pm. The Speaker of the talk was Ms Mamta D Jani, Country Head, MS Shwetha, Team Lead-Canada, Planet Education India.

She covered the session with below Highlighted topics:

Consistently voted one of the safest places to live, Canada is the second biggest country in the world and as a result has something for everyone. According to QS Best Student Cities 2018 three of its cities - Montreal (4th), Toronto (13th) and Vancouver (17th) - feature in the top 20. Combine this with high standards of research and teaching and studying north of the USA offers the perfect student experience.

Across its 98 universities, Canada's higher education sector nurtures 1.5 million students per year. Three of Canada's universities appear in the top 50 of the QS world ranking.

University of Toronto (28th)

McGill University (33rd)

University of British Columbia (47th).

Ten more Canadian institutions appear in the top 300 - an accolade only a handful of nations worldwide can boast. Otherwise known as 'grad' programmes, Masters degrees typically involve one to three years' full-time study, although course length will vary considerably depending on discipline.

The academic year begins in September and two-semester courses usually run until late April/early May; there are options for summer study (some institutions are exceptions to this structure, such as the University of Waterloo, that offer some full tri-semester courses).

Alongside traditional lectures and assignments, you'll take part in interactive learning, which is likely to involve site visits, placements and group work. The majority of Masters programmes also include a heavily-weighted dissertation.

A Doctoral degree, or PhD, requires two to three years' full-time study to complete, although a longer period of focused research and writing to complete the Doctoral thesis is usually required of candidates.A PhD completed in a Canadian institution is regarded as equivalent to one obtained in the UK.

Course fees -Studying in Canada is generally cheaper than it would be in other English-speaking countries such as the USA, UK or Australia; however, fees vary between courses and institutions.

Typically, a postgraduate degree in Canada will set students  back between CAD$4,000 and $6,000 (£2,500 to £3,600), although some can be as expensive as CAD$25,000 (£14,300) per year.

Funding to study in Canada -International students are not eligible for the same public funding as Canadian graduates, but don't worry - there are a number of funding options available for non-native students. It's a good idea to contact your chosen university to inquire as to what bursaries or funding they may offer.

Higher Education in UK and Ireland

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on Study Abroad Journey UK and Ireland – COVID 19 updated for the Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, on 16th July 2020 at 10:30 Am to 11:30 Am. The Speaker of the talk was Ms Minu Rajan, Destination Manager and Mr Manoj Gosavi, Branch Manager, IDP India.

They are covered the session with below Highlighted topics:

Studying in the UK no need to worry about the recognition of your hard-earned qualifications, as those gained at UK institutions are accepted by universities, employers and governments throughout the world, affording students a huge amount of freedom once they  graduate.

Postgraduate courses are also generally shorter in the UK, meaning that students can earn your degree and start your career much faster than in other countries.

English is one of the world's most popular languages and is widely used in the business sphere. Studying in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales also means that you'll get to experience the UK's unique culture. Nature lovers will feel at home within the countryside and coastal towns while city dwellers will find their haven in cosmopolitan cities such as London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast. Studying in the UK, students will find that the history is rich, the nightlife diverse and that opportunities to broaden your horizons are endless.

Masters Degrees

There are number of postgraduate study options for students in the UK. A variety of Masters courses are available and they are split into two types:

Taught courses - allow students to build on knowledge gained during your undergraduate study through lectures, seminars and practical work

Research courses - focus more on independent study and involve less guidance from tutors. Masters programmes last one-year full time, although some research-based courses can take 18 months to two years to complete. To gain entry onto a course as an international student students will need: to have gained a Bachelor’s degree (usually completed over three years,) or an equivalent qualification in another country to ensure students can meet the required level of English language to participate fully on your chosen course a copy of your passport.

Higher education in Ireland is provided by a range of institutions, including seven universities, seven Colleges of Education and 14 Institutes of Technology. Ireland's seven universities are state funded and include:

Five institutions feature in the world's top 500 according to QS world ranking. Trinity College Dublin is the highest entry, at number 108, followed by University College, Dublin (185), National University of Ireland, Galway (259), University College Cork (310) and Dublin City University (429).

Popular student cities include the country's capital, Dublin, which houses the greatest concentration of universities and colleges. Galway on the west coast and Cork on the south coast are also popular student destinations.

The academic calendar in Ireland reflects that of the UK. You'll usually start in September, work through to December and then break for Christmas. You'll resume your studies in January and finish in June/July with a break in between for Easter.

 Master Degree

Irish Masters follow a similar structure to those in the UK and usually take one year to complete. Some research Masters may take two years. You'll work through modular units of study, completing any necessary assessments, before embarking on a dissertation in your final year.

Entry requirements differ between institutions and courses; however most programmes require a 2:2 undergraduate degree in a related discipline as a minimum.

The majority of postgraduate courses in Ireland are taught in English, so if this isn't your first language students will need to provide evidence of your proficiency.

Make sure that you understand the entry requirements for the course that interests you before applying. Contact the university to clarify if necessary. This session ended with Q&A.

Higher Education in USA

The Office of Collaborations organized a virtual talk on higher education in the USA to provide post Covid- 19 world in higher education in the USA for Final-year Engineering, MBA and MCA students, on13th July 2020 at 10:30 Am to 11:30 Am. The Speaker of the talk was Mr Abhinav Bajaj, VP International Operations, Study Metro, Bengaluru.

He highlighted his session with below points:

The US education system is designed to teach life skills that will serve students well, no matter which career they choose after graduation. So, students enrolled in colleges or universities will take a variety of courses in order to get a degree.

For many international students, taking courses outside their intended academic field of study is a foreign concept. But US colleges and universities value liberal arts classes in subjects like history, English literature, and foreign language as well as mathematics, social, and natural sciences. These courses are considered important foundations for critical thinking, logical thought, and communications skills.

Studying in the US can be affordable if students plan well in advance, so students can apply to a range of scholarships offered by the American universities and colleges before deadlines. Open to meritorious international students to help them fund their studies, these financial aids can be partial or fully paid, depending on the criteria, course and the institution.

Many scholarships and bursaries are also offered by the American government, and various private and public establishments as well. When applying to any of these scholarships, make sure students check the criteria carefully, along with the application closing date.

Assistant-ship is a kind of grant which is a little bit difficult to live with as it requires your time of the day on physical work while students apply your brain in studies. Assistant-ships is that extra step students take to save up on your expenses abroad. There are different kind of assistant-ships available at most of the universities in USA and three of such types are stated below:

Assistant-ships are on campus employment for students who are providing some service to the University’s functioning. Scholarships on the other hand are fee waivers offered to students without any student service. Scholarships are something students get by studying hard but assistant-ship doesn’t only help students with your tuition fee but also saves a lot on your daily expenses. In case of US, you might find assistant-ship availability more than you find scholarships. This session is ended with Q&A.

Talk on how to write successful Statement of Purpose

An information session organized for the final year students, on how to write a Successful Statement of Purpose for overseas higher education application process by Ms Priya K, Branch Manager, Planet Education, Udupi on 21st October 2019. Also, organized Higher education awareness talk for third year engineering students and counselling program for alumni students.

She began her speech with a question, what is a statement of purpose? It is an application essay a student applying for a post-graduate programme at a foreign university is required to write in order to be admitted to the programme.

She said, An SOP is rightly called a personal statement because it is a statement prepared by the applicants to give an indication to the admissions committee what type of a person they are and to express their suitability for a particular programme that they wish to apply.
