Over the years I have witnessed a great change in the role of a teacher and the teaching profession which I love. At the beginning of my teaching career I had a very conventional outlook of a role of a teacher which was based on what I had seen my teachers in the classroom. However my experience reveals that to cater to the new age students, my thinking of teaching and its delivery has to change. My students are important to me. I want them to excel not only in their domain knowledge but also become responsible and committed individuals respected by society.

Besides teaching students the curriculum I advise them on the importance of accepted behaviour, communication, grooming, responsibility and accountability. I have made it a practice that they write a letter of absence if they miss my class. I forbade them to speak in their native language in the classroom, so that they practice professional communication skills which are the need of the hour.

I encourage peer learning in mathematical based courses, so that the needs of the slow learners are catered to. In addition to assignments and seminars, I group students to conduct field study by researching a socially relevant topic that serves as a learning experience and guide them to prepare a mini project report. I encourage students to come prepared for the class by giving the content in advance. In the class I motivate them to interact in groups and direct questions to each other. I have learned the best way to increase queries is by awarding points for questions rather than answers. This strategy is working well with the students. I also share a multitude of current information with them. I open the link for the news articles in the classroom and make them analyse the information. I persuade students to take up research topics for their projects which have not been taken up by their predecessors. This serves as a learning platform for me as well as the student.

Feedback from students takes the form of enhanced responsibility on their part. I take an oral feedback from students with regard to the activities conducted. I do an impact analysis for class interaction and group discussions. The way ahead will be to enhance more interactive methods and make the students responsible learners.
