SJCS Auditions: The week of September 18th
Opus Honor Choir Concert: Thursday, November 16, 2023

What is Opus?

Opus Honor Choir is an opportunity for students across the state of Iowa spanning grades 5-8 to grow as musicians with three major goals in mind:

1

To further the development of 5th-9th Grade choral programs through the learning, auditioning and performing of quality choral literature.

2

To achieve the excellence and pride that develops from singing in an Honor Choir that would ultimately be taken back to the home choir.

3

To offer attending directors the opportunity to observe master conductors in the rehearsal process.

Opus is an honor choir opportunity for students in grades 5-9, sponsored by the Iowa Choral Directors Association. Four choirs of 180 voices each will be chosen for this event. To audition, I have to send in a recording of you singing America, and two specific audition excerpts according to your grade level for the 2023-2024 school year.

Students who are accepted will learn additional music for the performance and will attend the festival on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Iowa State University in Ames. Please make sure you have this date available before auditioning.

Recordings will be made at school with Mr. Pierce the week of September 12th, 2023. These are very selective groups and only the most prepared students will be considered. Most students who are selected start practicing over the summer and have their music memorized for the audition. It is important that you practice on your own at home daily. We suggest at least 10-15 minutes per day, every day. Repitition is a very important aspect of the rehearsal process!

We look forward to working with you and your student(s). Break a leg!
