Senior Prom: A Night to Remember

By: Dane Buckmaster

In merely three weeks, St. Joe’s seniors will graduate and move on to adulthood. They will be scattering around the country to college, and won’t be able to experience too many more events where everyone is together.  Luckily, there is still one last hurrah before they venture onto their new lives.

The Senior Prom, planned by Mr. Dluhy, takes place on May 3rd. It has been planned all year, in order to create the best experience for the seniors. It’s being held at Samuel’s Grande Manor, which includes a large dance floor, a lot of food and drinks, and a completely different atmosphere than junior prom.

Mr. Dluhy explains that the senior prom varies heavily from the junior prom. Mr. Dluhy has to pick a date, a venue, etc. “Everythings different, it's more formal, it's not here on campus, a boatload of food, pretty much the last hurrah before graduation,” he claims, “I see more success with senior prom than junior prom, usually I aim for about 85% turnout.”

The seniors are encouraged to make the most of their night. “Our guys are always very thoughtful and respectful,” Principal Spillman claimed, “they always come through and introduce their dates and get to experience getting dressed up and having a great night out.” This is a great chance for seniors to meet each other’s dates and get to know each other even more.

Obviously, seniors are expected to act mature and responsible at this event. “Well, especially when you’re a senior you hope by the time you reach graduation you’ve become a gentleman,” Mr. Spillman claims, “You’re expected to act like one. We want to ensure a great night for them and their dates.”

The prom is built to be one of the last events during the year where the seniors can enjoy the time together. “I mean it's always great to see the entire class out there dancing, and enjoying one another’s company because it's one of the last moments this class has to do these things,” Principal Spillman claimed. It’s important for the seniors to cherish the time they have with each other before they graduate, and prom is a great way for that to happen.

For seniors, the prom means a lot. As mentioned, the seniors get to bring their dates and dress up, but it is also the last big event during the year that they get to experience with each other. It is a chance to experience something unrelated to schoolwork and more unique. It’s an opportunity to spend a night dancing and being around each other, and something not to be taken for granted. It is an event that will kickstart the end of the year and the end of their high school careers, so it will remain a lasting memory.
