St John Bosco School shares in the mission of the Church to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. St John Bosco School provides a Catholic Faith environment which supports young people to develop knowledge, skills and values in order to become active and committed members of our faith community.
Religious education learning is relevant, meaningful and part of the lives of young people and is more than solely teaching the tradition of the Catholic Church. At the heart of Religious Education is the fostering of the spiritual lives of students and the development of their relationship with God. Religious education benefits our young people and their lives by supporting and developing a foundation of personal faith and system of values and understandings to live their lives by.

St John Bosco was born in 1815. He lived near the slums of Turin which were overrun by poverty and child labour. Living within this community, he came face to face with his mission: to love, care for and educate boys. He founded an orphanage and then a trade school. His approach was to build a sense of understanding between teacher and student, engendered by daily contact, friendly chats and a genuine interest in his students’ futures.
St John Bosco’s mission underpins the vision statement of our school:
Adele Euphrasie Barbier is our founding Mission Sister. In December 1861 Euphrasie Barbier founded a new congregation, Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, in Lyon, France, with the aim of working in the foreign missions. The first foreign missionaries, all French, left France in late October 1864 for New Zealand and within the year they were busy teaching children of the European settlers and young Maori girls in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Life was not easy for our young foundress. In spite of difficulties the congregation flourished and allowed the establishment of new foundations. Euphraise’s mission was…
Building Relationships
- with God
- with Others
- with Creation
through…
Contemplation - a loving contemplation of our God. In contemplating God Trinity, the God of Love and Communion, we will understand what love is and share in the divine work of Love as Mary did.
Communion - Our shared life in community finds its source in God – the Trinity. We are drawn into this dance of communion with each other, interwoven and independent with all that is. It is sharing the Good News and helping care for this fragile Earth we have been entrusted with.
Mission - Empowered by the Spirit, we are sent as disciples of Jesus to share our lives in the service of love seeking the fullness of life for the whole of creation
Following in Euphrasie Barbiers footsteps our School Gospel values are:
