How Do You Join the National Junior Honor Society?

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an organization that recognizes and honors outstanding middle school students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. If you're interested in joining NJHS, here are the steps you'll typically need to follow:

1. Academic eligibility: St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju, NJHS requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In addition, you will also need to demonstrate exceptional qualities in the areas of leadership, service, character, and citizenship.  Grade Point Averages are calculated at the end of the first semester and shared with the NJHS Faculty Advisor.  Students must be enrolled at SJA Jeju for at least one full semester before they can qualify, except in the case of students who have been in NJHS at another school and have the proper documentation to transfer membership.

2. Invitation to Apply: After determining which students have met the required 3.7 GPA, the NJHS Faculty Advisor, Ms. Fromme, will send out invitations to apply. The application consists of three sections:

   1. Part I: Extended Responses - Students write short essay answers to prompts about service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

   2. Part II - Activities and Awards - Students list school, extracurricular, and volunteer activities they have been involved in and any awards they have received.

   3. Part III—Goals and Personal Responses - Students write short essay responses about their goals, characteristics, and circumstances

3. Fill-Out the application: Students finish the application, answering completely and honestly. Students should ensure their application highlights any leadership positions they have held, awards they have received, and service projects they have completed.

4. Obtain confidential recommendations from teachers: Students will need to obtain recommendations from two or three teachers whom they know well. These recommendations are confidential and are completed via an online Google Form.  The Faculty Advisor and Faculty Committee are the only ones to see the recommendations.

5. Submit your application: Once the student’s application is complete, they submit it to the NJHS faculty advisor before the deadline.  Recommendations will also need to be completed before the deadline, so students are asked to ask teachers for recommendations in a timely manner.
   
   

6. Log Entries and Incidents: The final piece of the student portfolio concerns their behavior and disposition as these impact the perceived character of a student, and the students are expected to act as role models for the community.  PowerSchool logs are checked and teachers are surveyed about incidents involving the applicants.
   
   

7. Scoring the Application - The applications are then given a score based on a rubric, which is provided to students along with the application so they know how they are scored.  There are three categories that students are scored on.  Character, Discipline, and Participation/Leadership/Serivce.  Each category is scored out of 4 and has equal weight.  Students are required to score a 3.3 in order to be considered by the faculty committee.  A student who has done very well academically, has good character, and good recommendations but has few ASAs or participated in very few service opportunities and gets a score of 1 will not earn the requisite score for membership (4+4+1)/3=3.  Students finding themselves in this situation should find a way to improve the category in which they scored a low score and reapply during the next application window.

8. Wait for a decision: The NJHS Faculty Committee will then review all applications and make a decision based on the criteria determined by the organization and outlined in the rubric. The faculty Advisor is part of the meeting with the five teachers on the Faculty Committee and may present the data and conduct the meeting. However, the faculty advisor only gets a vote if a member, or members, of the committee decide to abstain from voting, and the faculty advisor chooses to break the tie (this is optional, not mandatory).  If a student is selected, they will be notified and invited to participate in an induction ceremony.  If they are not selected, a letter will be sent outlining the reasons and asking students to apply the following year again.
   
   

9. If a student wishes to challenge the decision, they need to let the Faulty Advisor know in the requisite amount of time.  This process can only be conducted by the students, not their parents.  The meeting to challenge a decision will be attended by a school administrator as well as the faculty advisor and any members of the faculty committee that desire to participate.

2. 지원을 위한 초대장 발송: GPA 3.7 기준을 충족한 학생들을 확인한 후 NJHS 지도교사인 Mrs. Fromme 이 지원을 위한 초대장을 발송합니다. 신청서는 세 분야로 구성됩니다:

   1. Part I: Extended Responses - 학생들은 봉사, 리더십, 인성 및 시민 의식에 관한 질문에 짧은 에세이 답변을 작성합니다.

   2. Part II - Activities and Awards - 학생은 자신이 참여한 학교, 과외 활동 및 자원봉사 활동과 받은 상을 나열합니다.

5. 지원서 제출: 학생의 지원서가 완료되면 마감일 전에 NJHS 지도교사에게 제출합니다.  추천서도 마감일 전에 작성해야 하므로 학생은 교사에게 적시에 추천서를 요청해야 합니다.
   
   

6. 파워스쿨 로그 및 사건·사고: 학생 포트폴리오의 마지막 부분은 학생의 행동과 성향에 관한 것입니다. 학생은 커뮤니티의 롤모델이 될 것으로 기대되며, 상기 두 요소는 학생에 대해 주변이 가진 이미지에 영향을 미치기 때문입니다. 학생들의 품행이 기록되는 파워스쿨 로그를 확인하고 지원자와 관련된 사건·사고에 대해 교사에게 설문조사를 실시합니다.
   
   

7. 지원서 평가 - 그런 다음 지원서를 평가하며 평가 기준에 따라 점수가 부여됩니다. 이 점수는 지원서와 함께 학생에게 제공되므로 학생은 채점 방법을 알 수 있습니다.  학생에게 점수가 매겨지는 항목에는 세 가지가 있습니다.  인성, 규율, 참여/리더십/봉사.  각 항목은 4점 만점으로 채점되며 동일한 가중치를 갖습니다. 교사 위원회의 심의를 받으려면 3.3점을 받아야 합니다.  학업 성적이 매우 우수하고 인성이 좋으며 추천서가 좋은 학생이지만 ASA가 거의 없거나 봉사활동에 거의 참여하지 않아 1점을 받은 학생은 회원 자격에 필요한 점수(4+4+1)/3=3을 얻지 못합니다.  이러한 상황에 처한 학생은 낮은 점수를 받은 항목을 개선할 수 있는 방법을 찾아 다음 지원 기간에 다시 지원해야 합니다.

8. 결정을 기다리기: 그런 다음 NJHS 교사 위원회는 모든 지원서를 검토하고 조직에서 결정한 기준과 루브릭에 따라 결정을 내립니다. NHJS 지도교사는 교사 위원회의 5명의 교사와 함께 회의에 참여하며 데이터를 제출하고 회의를 진행할 수 있습니다. 다만, 위원 중 한 명 이상이 투표를 기권하면, 지도교사가 대신하여 투표할 수 있습니다. (이는 선택사항이며 필수가 아닙니다.) 학생으로 선발되면 해당 학생에게 통지하고 입단식에 초대합니다.  선발되지 않은 학생에게는 이유를 설명하고 다음 해에 다시 지원할 것을 요청하는 서한이 발송됩니다.
   
   

9. 학생이 결정에 이의를 제기하려는 경우, NJHS 지도교사에게 정해진 기간 내에 알려야 합니다.  이 절차는 학부모가 아닌 학생 본인만 진행할 수 있습니다.  결정에 이의를 제기하기 위한 회의에는 학교 관리자뿐만 아니라 지도 교사 및 참여를 원하는 교사 위원회 구성원이 참석합니다.

In middle school, we have classes that meet four times per week and classes that meet only twice a week.  The credit value of a course is determined by the amount of time spent face-to-face with the students, which also typically impacts the amount of preparation required for that class.  For SJA Jeju middle school, classes that meet four times a week are worth a full credit, and courses that meet twice a week are worth a half credit.

GPA는 어떻게 결정이 되나요?

중학교에는 일주일에 네 번 진행되는 수업과 일주일에 두 번만 진행되는 수업이 있습니다.  수업의 학점은 학생들과 대면하는 시간에 따라 결정되며, 이는 일반적으로 해당 수업에 필요한 준비 시간에도 영향을 미칩니다.  SJA Jeju 중학교의 경우 주 4시수의 수업은 1학점, 주 2시수의 수업은 0.5학점입니다.

For Cumulative GPA, the total value per class is summed for all classes and divided by the total credits, it is not simply an average of the semesters.  This is because some classes use a different grading scale, pass/fail classes for example, and these classes do not count toward GPA. 

전체 GPA의 경우 모든 수업에 대한 수업당 총값을 합산하여 총 학점으로 나눈 값이며, 단순히 학기의 평균이 아닙니다.  예를 들어 합격/불합격 수업 등 일부 수업에서는 다른 채점 척도를 사용하며 이러한 수업은 GPA에 포함되지 않기 때문입니다. 

What Happens if My GPA Drops?

Every semester the Faculty Advisor checks on student academic performance, character, community, and service.  Students who fall below 3.7 GPA for the semester and/or cumulative GPA will be notified by the faculty advisor that they need to stay on top of their academic responsibilities.   Additionally, If a student is unable to meet their volunteer obligations without a valid excuse, they will receive a warning that they must meet future obligations.

If grades continue to drop beyond one semester, the faculty committee meets to discuss putting the student on probation.  Students who are on probation and who do not take the requisite steps to improve their standing in NJHS can be removed.

GPA가 떨어지면 어떻게 되나요??

NJHS 지도교사는 매 학기 학생의 학업 성취도, 인성, 커뮤니티 및 봉사 활동을 확인합니다.  학기 GPA 및/또는 총 GPA 3.7 미만인 학생은 지도교사로부터 학업에 대한 책임을 다해야 한다는 통지를 받게 됩니다.   또한 정당한 사유 없이 자원봉사 의무를 이행하지 못한 학생은 향후 의무를 이행해야 한다는 경고를 받게 됩니다.

성적이 한 학기 이상 계속 떨어지면 교사 위원회가 회의를 열어 학생을 주의 관찰 대상에 처하는 것에 대해 논의합니다. 주의 관찰 대상이나 NJHS에서 자신의 상태를 개선하기 위해 필요한 조치를 취하지 않는 학생은 제명 처분을 받을 수 있습니다.

What happens if Behavior Incidents Mean I am Not Living Up to the Pillar of Character?  

Students who have repeated log entries or incident reports for behavior or who have been on In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension will also be reminded of their obligations.  Incidents of academic dishonesty are not tolerated in NJHS.  Depending on the seriousness of the incident, the Faculty Committee may call a special meeting to discuss the incident and vote on putting the student on probation.  Students who are on probation and who do not take the requisite steps to improve their standing in NJHS can be removed.

What Happens if I Do Not Do My Service?
