Q: Do elective classes run all year or just for one semester?
A: Elective classes run all year long.
Q: It does not seem fair that electives run all year, some students would like to change electives. Is there any chance this can change?
A: This is something we can look into for future years. However, Physical Education, Orchestra, Band, and some other classes are really better for students if they run all year. Having some classes that run all year and others that just run one semester makes scheduling difficult. However, we are happy to investigate schedule options where this works for the 2026-2027 school year.
Q: How many students are in a class?
A: When we plan our classes, we try to make them between 18 and 20 students. However, sometimes, because of schedule changes or the electives that teachers teach, we will get classes with a couple more students than that.
Q: Why are there so many electives?
A: At SJA, we believe in giving students choices so that they can explore different types of classes and subjects. This will help them discover who they are and where their interests are. Hopefully, this will help them choose what to study in university and what to do for their careers.
Q: How will students know what classes to take in order to prepare for AP classes in 9th Grade?
A: The determination of who can take AP Computer Science Principles and AP Human Geography will be based on several factors. For AP Human Geography, students need to have a MAP RIT Reading score of 240 or above (234-239 may apply for consideration). The student must also have an A in English and Social Studies. In order to take AP Computer Science Principles, students should have a MAP RIT score of above the 90th percentile in Language and an A in English.
Q: Do students have to choose subjects from the liberal arts, Sciences, Maths, and Social Sciences, or can they choose from a variety of subject areas?
A: We encourage students to explore their options, not specialize, in Middle School. We encourage them to try subjects from several areas of study as it will help them make more informed decisions.
Q: The fact that students will have to interact with many teachers instead of just a couple is going to be a challenge. Could you please provide a preparatory session on this topic?
A: We would be happy to have a parent session covering this topic.
Q: Is it possible to make it so that there is more time for sports and more time for play?
A: To do this, we would have to extend the day to make it longer. Some of our classes have a requirement for the amount of class time that we need to have with students, and taking this time away for play would mean that we need to make it up at another time.
Q: Is it possible to offer more field trips and more service trips and service opportunities?
A: This is something that we can look at expanding in the future. We like the idea of students doing more service.
Q: We have heard that the Fieldhouse and the middle school are really far apart. Can we increase the transition time?
A: Increasing transition time for all classes because of the transition times for one class is not an idea that works very well. We then have to worry about the supervision of students in crowed hallways between all classes and we would have to extend the day. However, students are given 7 minutes at the beginning of PE and 7 minutes at the end of PE to change. If it is a swimming unit, students are given even more time at the end of class. This is enough for most students most of the time. Students who struggle with tardies, are not always making the best decisions about how they use their time. However, if there are times when many students get a tardy following a PE class, we excuse those tardies because we know students did not have sufficient time.
Q: Do students have to transition between classes frequently? How much time do they have?
A: Students have six classes per day and they have five minutes to transition between classes. If students are in a class located outside of the middle school building, they are given extra time by the teacher of that class to transition there and transition back to the middle school building.
Q: Will my child's attitude toward learning change?
A: We find that students take their studies more seriously with every passing year until they graduate. Some of them take it too seriously and this can affect their social-emotional well-being. However, nearly all students get more focused on their studies every year as they prepare to go to high school and as they prepare to apply to university. Also, the workload for classes gets more intense each year, which means that students need to start thinking about their attitude towards studying if they want to be successful.
Q: In Middle School, what time does the school day end?
A: The academic day ends at 3:30 PM. However, we then have Co-Curricular Activities (formerly After School Activities - or ASAs) from 3:35 PM - 4:15 PM, and sports from 4:20 PM - 6:00 PM. So if your child is involved in Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and sports on Monday - Thursday, then their day will end at 6:00 PM.
Q: Are there many tests? How often are the tests?
A: Students will have some type of summative assignment for every unit of study for each class - a summative could be a test, an essay, a project, a presentation, etc. Many courses will also have quizzes during the units. Classes usually have between 4 and 8 units in a year. Tests and quizzes will become more frequent as students get to hire grades.
Q: Do students find it difficult to manage their own attendance and grades?
A: Some students do. If students are tardy frequently or miss classes then they will have meetings with the school administration, and the parents will called to help them manage the issue. If the student is struggling with their grades, their advisor will check in with them. If they have been struggling for a couple of weeks ar are getting D or F in the class then the Admin will notice this when they run the weekly D & F list from PowerSchool and the Student Support Team will discuss the problem at our weekly meetings. We will meet with the students to see what kind of intervention is needed from us to help them be successful.
