Mr. Chris Thomson comes to SJA with over 15 years of experience with his Master's Degree in School Counseling and 5 years of experience working in Korea. The College Counseling Dept believes there's a school for any type of student. Here at SJA we believe in working with the family collaboratively and maintain transparent communication so we can accurately provide guidance about the college application process no matter where they choose to go to school in the world. Many people believe college counseling begins in 12th grade but we begin that process in 9th grade.
Through the Advisory program, students can start exploring who they are and start to become more active by participating in after school activities, sports, community service, and really start to grow as an individual. The College Counseling Department believes we are most effective when spend time directly with the students so we meet individually and in small groups. When your child enters their 12th grade year, the college counselor will have 1-on-1 meetings with each student as well as invite each family to meet individually. Your child can make as many appointments as they want to discuss any aspect of the college application process which can include, but is not limited to their essays, creating college lists, advice on college majors, standardized testing, and more.
Once the second semester starts the focus will shift to 11th grade students. The College Counselor will start preparing the 11th graders for the college application process by meeting in advisory classes, meeting 1-on-1 with each junior during their Study Hall, and reviewing the college application process. Parents of 11th grade students are encouraged as well to schedule an appointment to meet individually to discuss your child's plan for college. Although a large percentage of time is spent with 11th and 12 grade students, the College Counselor is always available to meet with any student and parent from any grade level. Our goal is to prepare students not just for college, but for life beyond. If you would like to schedule an appointment click here and if you have any questions you can contact Mr. Thomson (chris.thomson@sjajeju.kr).
