The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently awarded The University of Toledo a $1 million grant as part of a $42 million round of funding to advance critical technologies for producing, storing and deploying clean hydrogen.

The grant was awarded to Dr. Yanfa Yan, Distinguished University Professor, and Dr. Zhaoning Song, a research assistant professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, who have spent years developing highly efficient perovskite solar cells. Yan and Song are also studying #perovskite as a low-cost way to break apart water molecules, separating hydrogen from oxygen.

“This is considered the holy grail for hydrogen production,” Yan said. “We’re using abundant sunlight and abundant water to generate renewable hydrogen. It is the ultimate way to provide clean energy.”

UToledo will provide an additional $250,000 to the project, for a total investment of $1.25 million.

The Biden administration has set a goal of having a 100% clean electrical grid by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
