It started with an urgent plea for help late Saturday night as he walked to his car after a State Fair outing with his family.
And it ended with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett lying in a pool of blood with a broken hand after he rushed to confront a pipe-wielding suspect officials described as a "vicious thug."
By Sunday evening, the suspect was in custody, Barrett was recuperating at a hospital, and his heroics were being recounted on national cable and network news shows.
Barrett, first elected in 2004 and re-elected last year, was struck on the head and torso with the pipe and broke his hand, presumably when he punched the man. As he rested Sunday at Froedtert Hospital, where doctors stitched up cuts on his head and lip, authorities and witnesses explained what happened.

Richard Benjamin Speck[1] (December 6, 1941 – December 5, 1991) was an American mass murderer who systematically tortured, raped, and murdered eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital on July 14, 1966.
He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was later overturned due to issues with jury selection at his trial. Speck died of a heart attack after 25 years in prison. In 1996, video tapes featuring Speck were shown before the Illinois State Legislature to highlight some of the illegal activity that took place in prisons.

Two Milwaukee police officers were shot Tuesday afternoon on the near south side by a bicyclist whom they had stopped, police said. A suspect was arrested a short time later.
Both officers were shot more than once and were taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. One was in critical condition and one was in satisfactory condition, Police Chief Edward Flynn said.
The two 2nd District officers - who were in uniform and driving a marked police van - were shot by the bicyclist before they could draw their weapons around 3:10 p.m. in the 800 block of S. 2nd St., police said.
Flynn identified the officers as Bryan Norberg, 21, on the force six months, who was in satisfactory condition, and Graham Kunisch, 26, with 15 months on the force, who was in critical condition. Both were expected to survive.
A suspect whom Flynn identified as Julius C. Burton, 18, was arrested in a home in the 900 block of S. 3rd St. less than an hour later, and police recovered a gun. Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said he had broken into the house.
"This is a moment that tests our discipline as well as our resolve," Flynn said at the scene.
"This neighborhood came through today. At every key moment of this investigation, someone from the community stepped forward.
"A taxicab driver came to the assistance of the officers as they were bleeding in the street. A UPS driver tried to follow the footsteps of the suspect as he fled (from) the scene. Finally, an individual homeowner identified for us where he thought the suspect might be hiding. And on top of that, our officers, despite all the stress and emotion . . . extracted that suspect without incident and without injury."
Asked what prompted the officers to stop the bicyclist, Flynn would say only that "it started from a 'suspicion stop' that was actively resisted."
Traffic in the area was diverted, and Bradley Tech High School, with about 1,200 students, was locked down for the students' safety, said Philip Harris, a Milwaukee Public Schools spokesman. They were released around 5 p.m.
Tom Aldana, 25, who works at Super Star Tattoo, 712 S. 2nd St., said he was in the shop working, heard gunshots coming from south of the business and saw commotion outside. He started seeing squad cars arriving on the scene and went to check it out.

TOWN OF GENESEE — Authorities in Wisconsin say a missing 15-year-old girl has turned up safe in Chicago.
The Waukesha County sheriff's office says Kathryn Stalbaum of the Town of Genesee was found Friday evening.
Stalbaum missed her school bus Tuesday morning and texted a friend to say she would ride her bike the 2 miles to Kettle Moraine High School. She never arrived. Her bike later was found in Waukesha, about 8 miles from where authorities expected to find it.
Waukesha County Sheriff's Inspector Eric Severson says investigators are heading to Chicago to talk with the girl.
The sheriff's office said in a news release that authorities believe Stalbaum approached a Chicago police officer Friday evening. The news release says she appears to be in good condition.
The girl's disappearance remains under investigation.

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
