Milwaukee police are asking for the public’s help in the January armed robbery that led to 53-year-old Karen Simek’s death.
Members of the Milwaukee Police Department’s homicide division held a news conference Thursday to ask for anyone with information to step forward. Police said video shows the suspect walking past multiple pedestrians.
On Jan. 31, Simek, of Oconomowoc, was arriving to work at Garden-Fresh Foods, 726 S. 12th St., when a man on foot approached her.
The man, described by police as 22 to 27 years old with a light complexion, small build and a short afro, took Simek’s bag before shooting her.
The bag, which has not been recovered, is a tan or gray women’s canvas tote or travel bag, approximately 13 inches wide and 15 inches long, with a front zipper pocket
Simek died on the scene.
On video, the man, who is also about five feet six inches tall and weighs 140 to 150 pounds, was seen running southbound on National Ave.
Detective Nathan Butz said the man is seen loitering for awhile between S. 17th and W. National and S. 12th and W. National. During this time, police said the man had walked past multiple pedestrians.

The weapons he used were an AK-47 variant, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a .32 caliber pistol. He fired off a total of 37 rounds, shooting his victims in the back of the head repeatedly. Police later found a .460-calibre Weatherby Mark V rifle at the defendant’s work station.
He was found by police sitting calmly and stated that he did not speak German. At trial, he stated that he was born without a soul and that God had allowed him to earn a soul by traveling back in time to kill Nazis. McDermott claimed he had “traveled back in time and killed Hitler and the last 6 Nazis.” However, the prosecution asserted that the killings were motivated by his employer’s garnishment of his wages for the IRS, to pay child support taxes that he owed.[citation needed]
McDermott was found guilty of seven counts of first degree murder. He was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
