Former member Dr. Zhen Gu, now Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University returned to campus to give his invited lecture in Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Among his research accomplishments is the recently accepted paper in Nature Communications that described the delivery of anti-cancer drugs using cellular ATP levels as trigger. Congratulations Zhen! The group welcomes three new members to the lab. Dr. Yi Zou and Dr. Mancheng Tang are new postdoctoral scholars. Prof. Zhajun Zhan is a new visiting professor from Zhejiang Technology University. All three bring significant expertise in biosynthesis and natural products.

The group says goodbye to Dr. Wenbing Yin, who returned to China to become a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Microbiology in Beijing. Good luck Wenbing!

Finished the SIM Meeting at SF and the PKS-NRPS Meeting at Tahoe
Prof. Tang was awarded the Society for Industrial Microbiology Young Investigator award.
Lauren gave a great lecture in the student oral session. Even better, she was awarded the best poster award in the Natural Products Poster Session!
Yanran, KJ and Yit Heng also gave great posters at the meeting.

Wei delivered an insightful lecture on fungal PKS-NRPS systems at Lake Tahoe.

Zhen Gu’s paper: “Enzyme-Assisted Photolithography for Spatial Functionalization of Hydrogels.” Lab on Chip 2010, 10, 1946-1951. was featured on the cover of August issue of Lab on a Chip! Congratulations!
Zhen also received excellent news of postdoc offer from MIT, congratulations again!

Prof. Tang received the Allan P. Colburn Award for Excellence in Publications at the 2009 Annual AIChE Meeting in Nashville. The Allan P. Colburn Award for Excellence in Publications by Young Member of the Institute is presented to a member of AIChE for significant contributions to chemical engineering through publications.

The group says goodbye to Wenjun Zhang and Suzanne Ma! The first two Ph.D. students to graduate from the lab. Wenjun will be a postdoctoral scholar at Harvard Medical School with Prof. Chris Walsh, and starting 2011, will be an assistant professor at the Chemical Engineering Department at University of California, Berkeley. Suzanne will pursue interests in Industrial Biotechnology. Good luck to both Suzanne and Wenjun! We will miss you!

In a study published in the December 30th issue of Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences U. S. A., the Tang group engineered Escherichia coli to synthesize a family of compounds that consists of frontline antibiotics and anticancer drugs.

Prof. Tang was awarded the 2006 Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE). Established in 1996, PECASE represents the highest honor that any young scientist or engineer can receive in the United States.
