Brief Introduction:
This study focuses on the Bridging Online (BOL) program at Simon Fraser University (SFU). BOL, the mandatory online pre-employment course for all students entering the Co-operative Education program, is intended as a "skills transfer course" to help students develop the skills to communicate the integration of their academic, volunteer, and work experiences to future employers. The primary objectives are to encourage self-direction, increase skills transfer abilities, and create a portfolio (including resume, cover letter, and interview questions) for use in the Co-op Program. Activity theory, a sociocultural theory, is a useful tool to understand how a group of people collaboratively work toward a common object within the context of a community that is mediated by rules, tools, and division of labour (Engestrom, 2001; Mwanza, 2000). Using "Activity Theory," this study aims to investigate and understand the BOL I program, trying to propose some recommendations to make BOL I more effective for participants.
