"Anybody Seen Pete"
Second Annual Arts Country Juried Arts Competition Glenhyrst 2013
Artist: Michael A. Hunter
Fine Art Studies: Fanshawe College in London and University of Windsor.
My friend Jon Hickmott who is an avid camper came to my house with his family for dinner. During our dinner conversation he started to explain his camping trip with his brother.
"You are never going to believe this..." Jon explained.
"While we were setting up our tents this heron wandered into our camp site, and the
chipmunks started coming out to see what the heron was up too. To our amazement the
heron speared one of the chipmunks with his beak. After the heron was sure it was
dead, the bird ate it"!
John went on to explain that the chipmunks kept coming out to see what was going on
as if they were playing with the bird. The bird was not playing; it was feasting. Jon could
not get over how unintelligent the chipmunks were especially after the bird ate seven or eight of them.
I thought this was a great story, so I asked Jon if he could send me the video he had
taken of the event. He obliged me by posting the video for me and he also pointed out
some other similar videos on "You-tube" which happens to include better footage.
I took his video and created the composition for the piece while incorporating other images of
chipmunks from my archive. I used the internet to look at multiple heron's to collect the
visual detail needed to finish the bird itself and I fabricated the rest.
The title "Anybody Seen Pete" plays on the sadistic humor of the situation, where it is almost comical and cruel how nature can be.
PORT ROWAN BOATS
The original watercolour painting of the dry dock at Port Rowan was created in 1999.
My parents brought me here as a child for our boating and fishing adventures.
Port Rowan is near Long Point Provincial Park.
This park is located on a 40 km (24.9 mi) stretch of land that juts from Ontario's
southernmost border into Lake Erie. The United Nations recognizes this park as
a biosphere reserve. Bird use this area for migration in March.

DOVER DOCKS FOG
My latest collection of paintings pertains to the atmosphere created from Lake Erie. The fog and fishing boats of Port Dover have led me to create a landscape series of paintings relating to the spiritual connection we have with trees, fog and water.
In 2010 Port Dover Fog was reproduced as a Giclee Print from the original Acrylic on masonite created in 2009. There will only be a limited number of prints made. If a print is damaged or destroyed there will be no replacements.

PORT DOVER FISH HOUSE
Port Dover fish house was created in 2001. The painting was selected for a jury show in Hamden, Connecticut, USA in 2002.
What captured my attention for this series of three paintings was the decay of the twisted metal of the past industrial fishing equipment left beside the channel that leads to Lake Erie. These paintings have led me to explore other fishing boats as subject matter where fog and atmosphere set the tone for the painting. I am currently working on two painting of fishing boats that are emerging from the fog.
