Sharing Our Research Experience

The Scenarios created by our NSF ASSECT group are different from other SBL scenarios for the following reasons...

  1. The CT Rubric is incorporated during creation
  2. A Subject Matter Experts are used for a Persuade-Me activity for students
  3. A Teamwork Video is used as a Persuade-Me activity for students
  4. CT Assessments are incorporated to measure achievement (Pre-Test/Post-Test, Riddle Questions, Think Aloud)

Database Scenario: Students will be assisting Quick-Help-Desk, Inc. which is a young energetic contract database software development firm as contract database programmers. They have been asked by the manager to join a team to work on a community college help desk database management system focused on maintaining help desk records. The college IT department wants the IT staff members to be able to pull up the help desk records of a computer before they work on it.

Web Development Scenario: Students become a member of the Student Web Developers Group (SWDG), a college student group that scours the internet for outdated websites. They offer web development expertise for short 1 to 2 months projects intended only to update an existing site at a very affordable rate. Each SWDG group defines what “outdated” means. This definition should include XHTML DTD standards and the use of frames and tables for page layouts. SWDG is NOT interested in the content of the web pages that it evaluates. ONLY the code is of interest to the SWDG. When the SWDG team is done with a site, it looks almost exactly as it did before being rewritten. The difference in the pages is in their maintainability, response time, and load time.

Security a PC Scenario: Students work in a group to define an environment in which they will learn how best to secure a PC in that specific environment. End User documentation is created to explain how to Secure the PC.
