Dr. Rebhun was educated in public schools in New York City and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before earning a Masters in Mathematics and a doctorate in Zoology from the University of Chicago. He served in the Navy during World War II. Over his long academic career as a professor of Biology, he taught at the University of Illinois Medical School and at Princeton University. At the University of Virginia, he was Commonwealth Professor of Biology from 1970 until his retirement in 1996. He taught and did research almost every summer at the Marine Biological Laboratories of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where he also served several terms on the board of trustees. He was the author of more than 130 scientific papers.
