Dr Rob Toomey enjoys most sports and is a member of The Neston Club and Royal Liverpool Golf Club. His academic interest is in "Welsh Copper ; the history of mining and making of copper in Wales from The Bronze Age onwards".
When it all kicked off :
the Sports Boom in Victorian Wirral
Sport boomed in Victorian Britain. Young men and women living in towns like Birkenhead or Liverpool were seeking exercise and recreation. To cater for their needs traditional games were modernised : rules were formalised, clubs, leagues and associations were formed. Cricket, Rugby, Football and Tennis in their new forms exploded in popularity.
In this talk I describe the Sports Boom on the Wirral in the period 1840 to 1890 and consider the legacy that has endured to this day.
Welsh Copper
A visitors' guide to the mining and making of copper in Wales
From the earliest times Copper has helped making man live more comfortably, trade more successfully but also make war more aggressively. And for long periods in ancient and recent history Wales has been the centre of world copper production. Many of the places associated with this story are within a short drive of the Wirral. In this talk I tell the story of Welsh copper and put it into historical context in order to encourage my listeners to visit the places described.
The talk has already been given to a number of local societies such as the Parkgate Society and the Heswall Society.
