W.C. RONEY TRUCKING CO., Inc. Burlington, NC
William Chesley Roney,Sr. (b. 1908- d. 1988) started in the 1930s
with Ice Cream sales in a truck, then with a 1940's purchase of a three wheel bike
fitted with cooler box, making sales around town. He later bought a Cushman's
motor scooter which had a freight box and he switch the box off of the bike and place
it on the Cushman and. During world war II he did part time work on loading
dock at Associated Transport and also work in dye house at Burlington
Industries, Pioneer plant. In the late 1940's he begun doing freight and
moving work for hire and when the requirements for operating authority
was needed he apply for grandfather rights for General freight and state-
wide moving rights from The North Carolina Utilities Commission.
He was a moving company agent for several large firms through the
years, that was serving Burlington, NC and Alamance county area and
also handling statewide service with a small storage warehouse,
first rented from John Long then later with Mr. Zimmerman on Park
Ave. and Lakeside st. of Burlington. Mr. Nolen Wooten and sons were
a customer who had rented part of a warehouse there during the 1970s
-80s, they were a great family business to know and work with. After
my older brother Gary finish high school he took over most of the
driving then as Pop had serious eye trouble, they both did many a
moving job both local and statewide. I was helping with work when big
enough, just as my other brothers had before me and I begun full time
working about 1974 or 1975. Pop had health problems which along with
natural ageing and a life time of hard work, had slowly weak him and finely
took him from us one night in July of 1988. He was married to my Mom
(Mary McPherson) for over fiftyfour years and had four sons that they
raised, one infant son (W.C. Roney, Jr.) died in 1943, He was the son
of Clyde Ruffin Roney and Bernice Boone Roney of Burlington, NC.

Report of The North Carolina
Gettysburg Battle Ground
ComÂmission.
Raleigh, N. C., July 14, 1913.
To the Governor.
Sir :—The Commissioners apÂ
pointed by your Excellency unÂ
der Joint Resolution 51, Public
Laws, 1913, respectfully make
the following report of their acÂ
tions and proceedings:
In relays the members of the
Commission, between June 19
and July 3, 1913, visited Gettys-Â
burg, Pennsylvania, and the
fields around the place upon
which were fought the great
battles of July 11, 2 and 3, 1963.
The Commissioners had no difÂ
ficulty in identify the several
points and positions on those
battlefields where North Carolina
soldiers marched and fought,Z
and they are satisfied after a
careful examination and inspecÂ
tion of the grounds, of official*re-
ports of those battles made by
officers, Union and Confederate,
and after ths ’examination of
witness who were participants,
that North Carolina’s claims
that her troops bore the brunt
of t e first day’s battle and
suffered greater losses in killed
battle and suffered greater looses
in killed and wounded in the
three day’s battles than did the
troops of any gother State; that
on the late evening of July 2nd,
they pierced and broke the Fed*
eral infantry lines on Bast
Cemetery Hill .and captured
several pieces of artillery; and
thatfthey advanced as far, or
further, than any othe? troops
engaged irk; Longttreet's Assault
on the afternoon of the third
day’s battle are all founded.
To mark by substantial tablets
the several positions of |the
North Carolina troops which the
Commissioners wish to emplha-
size, was denied them by the
Gettysburg National Park ComÂ
mission under their regulations
concerning the location of tablets
and monuments proposed to be
erectedjon the battlefield and the
inscriptions on such tablets and
monuments. The decision of
the Gettysburg National Park
Commission was not made, on
the ground that North Carolina’s
claims are not accurate and true.
That question was not considered.
The Commissioners had gone
to Gettysburg with tablets of a
temporary character alredy preÂ
pared for the purposes above
mentioned to be substitute
afÂterwards by more permanent
ones of stones or bronze. They
carried with them also other
material and fthings necessary
for the carrying out of the above
mentioned resoiution.

RIDGEWAY. The initials W. E., evidently those of the mason or architect, and the date 1812 are cut high in its chimney. The house was built by Archibald Thweat and passed to Kidder Meade, to two Doctors Anderson, and in 1847 to Major Isaac Roney, who named it for his former home, Ridgeway—two miles from the village. The next owner was John Y. Harris, who married Major Roney's daughter Ella. Set back from the street, behind shrubs and flowers, the simple and spacious white frame structure presents a hospitable façade to passersby.

Roney Family Reunion Tradition Celebrated
The name Roney is Irish Gaelic, originally spelled O'Ruanaidh, meaning "descendent of the hero." The name was shortened to O'Rownee, O'Roney and O'Ronoo and finally anglicized to Roney, Rooney, and Rowney. The first Roney in this country was from Ireland who immigrated to America around the 1700s and settled on the eastern side of the Rappahannock River in Richmond County, Virginia. Some of the family migrated to Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia and Ohio.
The William Roney family are direct descendents of Henry Roney Jr. and Julia Bird of Dinwiddie, Virginia. Little is known about Julia A. Bird (Native American and African descent). From this union were born William, Thomas, Ernest, Samuel, Junius and Robert Roney. Other descendents of Henry Roney included Belle, Hugh, Fitzgerald Lee, Lottie and Maggie Roney. William Roney was united in marriage to Minnie Yates on December 18, 1889. From this union were born prominent citizens of Dinwiddie County: Henry Roney, Johnnie Roney, Samuel Roney, Laura Roney, Lacy Buckner, Lelia Roney Hill, Pearl Roney Moss, Oliver Roney, Leroy Roney, Zuline Roney Hicks, Otelia Roney Curley and Elnora Roney Walker Corbitt.

Carolyn,
I am a Roney, originally from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Is there a possibility that we are from the same family tree? I am trying to research my family's history as well and if we are related, we could possibly assist each other.
