"Culture vs. Sculpture" in the future of the architecture professionThroughout her career, architect Helene Dreiling has taken an active role in advancing the situation of women in the profession. She now serves as executive director of the Virginia Center for Architecture, a non-profit that develops public understanding of architecture. Helene currently holds national office as Secretary of the American Institute of Architects, and in May 2012 the AIA membership elected her to serve as 2013 first VP/2014 President of the organization, thus to become the 3rd woman President since the AIA's founding in 1857.

Following a Conservatory tour w/ Audrey, Eliza led us through the Park to supper. Among architects featured in the 2010 Modern Views film, Audrey Van Horne (Van Horne & Van Horne) prepared the 1993 plan for restoration of the Conservatory and takes an active role in the current campaign to complete the restoration.  Architect/landscape designer/arborist Eliza Davidson (Arbutus Design), author of the long-term vegetation plan for Volunteer Park, serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Olmsted Parks.

In the first line of response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Rachel mobilized 3 teams of “Mississippi Missionaries” to provide emergency assistance in Gulf Coast communities, drawing funding & other resources together to support this critical work. She has since organized & taken part in assistance programs in Washington, throughout the US, & internationally -- most recently in Haiti & Sendai, Japan as part of an international delegation of architects. Since 2006 she has held the position of Store Design Director for local independent retailer Metropolitan Market, where she oversees major remodels, new project development, and design strategies for public engagement. In addition, she pursues studies in mediation.

Excerpt from The Seattle Times (by Marsha King, 1990),

"Designing Women - Female Architects In Washington Have Worked Hard To Build Their Careers":  "In the early '40s, when she was an eighth-grader in West Seattle, Jane Hastings wrote about what she was going to be when she grew up. The composition prompted the teacher to keep her pupil after school. 'I just don't want to see you hurt,' the woman confided.  'They'll never let you be an architect.' At that time, probably only two women were architects in the state. But it was too late to dissuade the girl. Not a doghouse was being built in her Fauntleroy neighborhood that Jane didn't visit every day on the way home from school. 'I was fascinated by construction,' she recalls. Five years later, Hastings found herself the only female in a University of Washington architecture class of 200. She could never skip a lecture, unlike her peers, because the professor would immediately notice her absence. In 1953, Hastings became an architect - the eighth woman to do so since the state began licensing in 1919."
