Vacant positions

We want to support ambitious PhD candidates and postdocs

Several positions of visiting research assistant: solar-powered energy-water technologies for development in India

The Project: We currently have some visiting RA positions (3-6 months) for investigating solar-powered energy-water technologies for development in India. The visiting RA will work on numerical modelling and/or experimental studies of home-scale solar systems for water desalination, cooling and energy provision.

Your Profile: An UK or international student with good programming and/or experimental skills. Passion for clean energy, water, food, and wider decarbonisation. Committed to facilitating energy transitions to net zero and open to talking to cross-disciplinary researchers.  Commitment to transparency, reproducibility and Open Science; Experience with research for development is a plus

The group: The He Research Group is a mixed modelling/experimental lab. We are a team and support each other. You have the independence to develop your own ideas. The group aim to be a jumping board for your successful career in academia, industry, and spin-outs.

How to apply: To apply for these positions, please email Dr Wei He (wei.4.he@kcl.ac.uk).

I am always welcome interested prospective students and researchers to contact me and discuss potential opportunities in the group. Here are some funding opportunities:

PhD's funding sources are but not limited to

Postdoc's funding sources are but not limited to

Postdoc 1 (filled): Grid-scale energy storage -- compressed air energy storage and thermal energy storage

The Project: Lead the development of numerical models and analysis of high-temperature compressed air energy storage (Hi-CAES) systems. Objectives are to understand system dynamics during thermo-mechano-electric energy conversion processes via a whole Hi-CAES system simulation study and dynamic modelling; and  to optimise the integration and the coupling between various subsystems and components and to understand the coupling factors of heat and pressure in air compression and expansion with additional heat sources. The project is collaborating with researchers from the Universities of Warwick, Birmingham and Liverpool, specialising in electrical systems, materials, and high-voltage engineering.  The position is funded by EPSRC Hi-CAES project for 24 months.

Your Profile: PhD in an energy system discipline, eg applied thermal engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, etc; Expert modelling in Matlab/Simulink or Python; Experience with system dynamic modelling, and energy storage; Commitment to transparency, reproducibility and Open Science; Experience with materials of thermal energy storage and power systems is a plus

The group: The He Research Group is a mixed modelling/experimental lab. We are a team and support each other. You have the independence to develop your own ideas. The group aim to be a jumping board for your successful career in academia, industry, and spin-outs.

PhD 1 (filled): Consumer energy decarbonisation and energy/water/food/transport poverty mitigation

The Project: Lead the development of numerical models and analysis tools for consumer energy decarbonisation within regional/global perspectives. Objectives are to 1) analyse domestic energy decarbonisation (electricity, heating and transport)  options from the customer's perspective (one region or across regions in the world), 2) assess if decaronisation will worsen equality of access to energy services (e.g., electricity, water, etc), and /or 3) assess if bottom-up customers' least cost options are compatible with top-down system optimums. Also, similar to HeatMyHome.ninja project, this PhD project will develop modelling tools.  The PhD project is funded by KCL for over 3.5 years.

Your Profile: A UK home student with good programming skills and interests. Passion about clean energy and decarbonisation. Committed to facilitating energy transitions to net zero and open to talking to cross-disciplinary researchers.  Commitment to transparency, reproducibility and Open Science; Experience with modelling, optimisation and programming is a plus
