For the past seven years, Wheeling Lodge #9 has participated in the Wheeling Sleepout. The Wheeling Sleepout is an event held each year by Youth Services System, Inc. to raise money and awareness for youth homelessness in the Ohio Valley. The even asks for teams to raise money and to build shelters out of cardboard or any other readily available material, based on a theme. These shelters are then judged in different categories and prizes are awarded. This year, Wheeling Lodge #9 not only were participants at the Wheeling Sleepout, we were a corporate sponsor of the event. Throughout the years, the Lodge and Youth Services System, Inc. have become partners in helping each other help the Wheeling community, and this was another way for us to show our support for our good friends at YSS.
The theme this year was “Shine A Light”. As youth homelessness is an often hidden problem across the country, this event and those like it want to “Shine a light” on this growing and very important issue. The Lodge members talked about several different designs for our shelter following the theme of shining a light on youth homelessness, and decided that a museum would be the best fit for us. With battery operated lights shining on the different issues and possible solutions surrounding youth homelessness, our shelter won first place in theme. While winning is nice, and the event is great fun, we appreciate the goal of the event and thank YSS for their hard work each year for putting on a great, fun, informative event. We hope to work with YSS for many years to come.
