Napoleon I, French emperor, was born on August 15th, 1769 in Ajaccio (Corsica). He received a very good academic and military education in France. After graduating the best military school in Europe, École Militaire of Paris, he entered the service of King Louis XVI. After the French Revolution he worked on his career in the French army. In the following years he was the commander of the Army of Italy. Napoleon was fighting against Austria, gaining new territories and the control of Italy. He was successfully leading the French Army against Egypt and occupied this country for years. In autumn 1799 Napoleon went back to Paris, overthrew the government and became the first consul for life – with immense political power. He was again fighting against Austria and England. In France he reformed its legal system with the Code Napoleon. In the years 1803 – 1812 Napoleon led the French Army against England, Austria, Prussia, Sweden and Russia. He was ruling almost the whole Europe – only England could be never conquered by him. During the campaign against Russia in 1812 Napoleon’s Grand Army was destroyed and the fall of the Empire and the Emperor begun. Napoleon abdicated in April 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba, where he ruled for another 10 months. He returned once more to Paris, forced King Louis XVIII to flee and begun his “Hundred Days” reign. The Allies, afraid of Napoleon’s influence, forced him to renew the war and defeated him at Waterloo on June 18th, 1815. Napoleon abdicated again and was sent into exile on the island St. Helena, where he died on May 5th, 1821.
