Paris

Paris is the capital of France and was founded in 53 BC. Today it is the most populated city of France with a population of around 2.2 million people (central Paris). The entire metropolitan area (all twenty arrondissements) include around 9.6 million inhabitants. Paris is located in the north-central of France and the size of it is around 100km². The city is also called “City of Light” and offers a lot of sights. These are museums, like the “Musée de Louvre”, cathedrals, like the “Notre Dame” or the Eiffel Tower (“Tour Eiffel”) to name only a few of the most famous sights in Paris. Paris is also known for being the most romantic city and inspired many authors and artists all throughout history.

The only official language is French and Paris is divided into twenty arrondissements. Central Paris is made from the arrondissements from one to eight which house the most historical and cultural sites of the city. The French currency used to be “Franc” but has been changed to the “Euro” in 1999.

Over 2000 years ago France was inhabited by Celtic tribes called “the Gauls” and Paris was named after the tribe “Parisii” who lived in the area of Ȋle de la Cité. Before the French Revolution (1789-1793) France used to have a monarchy. The Revolution caused the modernisation of Paris. Under Napoleon I (1848-1870) France returned to monarchy and in this period Napoleon built many monuments and also a modern sewer system. During World War II Paris was almost destroyed by the Germans but survived and was able to hide important artworks from the Louvre.

After World War II many inhabitants of the French colonies moved to France, Paris in particular. General Charles de Gaulle and his government changed the French government to the present Fifth Republic.

Today Paris profits from the large amount of tourists that come to see the city each year.
