Q. My child would like to join the school's Band/Orchestra or Chorus. Will they miss academic classes to participate in these activities?A. Participation in these fine arts activities is optional at Andover Middle Schools. These classes run 2 times per week over the course of the year and are scheduled during students' Flex Time. This means that your student will not miss another class in order to participate in one of these opportunities.Band - you must have at least minimal experience playing an instrument in order to participate. The school does not teach instrumental lessons. Band includes brass, wind, and percussion instruments - and can also include keyboard and guitar. If you have a question about whether your child can participate, please ask.Orchestra - again, minimal experience is needed to participate - though if you have just begun playing violin, viola, cello, or bass, you can join. Beginner 6th graders are welcome!Chorus - no experience needed - just bring your voice and a love of singing!
Q. My child has submitted their choice for World Language. Will they get their selected language? If not, will they be allowed to switch languages next year?A. West Middle School offers Spanish and French. World Language selection/registration is done in the Spring of your child's 5th grade year. He or she will be asked to choose Spanish or French via an electronic registration process, and course sections will be filled as they are received. Students who are new to WMS will be asked for their choice in languages upon registration. Because we have 3 Spanish teachers and 1 French teacher, students may end up being placed in Spanish even if they requested French. Please don't worry if your child does not get his or her first choice. No matter which course your child takes, he or she will develop solid language acquisition skills and will be very well prepared for high school. Students remain in either Spanish or French for all 3 years of middle school. Students do not switch world languages from grade to grade.
Q. Is there a bell schedule that I can refer to?A. Yes - here is the 2020-2021 school year bell schedule.
