Kenneth R Westerman is a life long Ann Arbor resident and a product of the Ann Arbor Public Schools, singing in the choirs at Ann Arbor High School for Mary Ellen Henkel and Robert Pratt. Mr. Westerman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition from Yale University in 1971. While at Yale he sang with the Battell Chapel Choir, Yale Glee Club, Spizzwinks, and Whiffenpoofs. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan in 1975. Mr. Westerman studied voice with his mother Carol Westerman, Blake Stern, Harold Haugh, Leonard Johnson, Oscar Henry, Gail Tremetier, his sister Jean Westerman Gregg past president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and George Shirley. Mr. Westerman taught vocal music for the Ann Arbor Public Schools for thirty five years; at Scarlett Junior High for six and at Pioneer High School for twenty nine. Mr. Westerman is a life member of the American Choral Directors Association, emeritus member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. He is also a member of the Voice Care Network.
Cherry Westerman was born in Springfield Vermont. She played oboe in the band and violin in the orchestra at Springfield High School. Mrs. Westerman attended Yale College for two years. While at Yale she sang in the Yale Glee Club. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan in 1975. Mrs. Westerman studied voice with her mother in law Carol Westerman and Ralph Herbert. Mrs. Westerman taught vocal music for the Bellville Public Schools for one year and the Ann Arbor Public Schools for 34 years; 29 years at Slauson Junior High and then Middle School. Mrs. Westerman is an emeritus member of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. She is also a member of the Voice Care Network.
Kenneth and Cherry married in 1971. They have a daughter, Erica, and a son, Michael, who both sang in their father's choirs at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. Both also played instruments; Erica bassoon and Michael tuba. Erica sang with two student a cappella groups while an undergraduate at Yale (Red Hot and Blue, Whim'n'Rhythm). Michael sang with The Longfellows while an undergraduate at Bowdoin.
