WBC has a long history in the Westboro area as the club is reported to have started shortly after the end of World War I (1918). Throughout its years, the club has operated out of different facilities but all within the Westboro area; until 1995, the club was known as the Dovercourt Badminton Club.
The club runs from the beginning of September until the end of May every Monday and Thursday evening from 7:00pm until 10:00pm. There are 4 wood floor courts. The walls are white (play is with yellow birds), the ceilings are high and the playing area is well lit. The club has an active social committee which organizes activities year round and our tournament organizer is always looking for interested players to participate in the many tournaments WBC plays in each season.
WBC is comprised of the following executive members who are involved in running the club and provide the best service possible.
I first started playing badminton in high school. I quickly fell in love with the smashing aspect of the game as it was a great way to blow off steam, but it wasn’t until I started playing at WBC in 1996 that I came to realize that badminton was so much more. I have been an active & proud member of WBC ever since. I really enjoy the competitive level of play but even more so the personalities and personal connections made.
Westboro Badminton is where the action is. This club is blessed with an excellent atmosphere and a tremendous membership rank and file. It is truly an honor to belong to such an outstanding organization. Come check us out and have a smashing good time!
I started playing badminton at the age of 10 as an extracurricular activity attached to my weekly Chinese school program. During my high school years, I competed for Sir Robert Borden High School and represented Ottawa in OFSAA competition in 1996 competing in men doubles.
I am the youngest in experience amongst the execs of Westboro badminton club. I played with the club from 1996-1999 and took a brief 11 year break before coming back to WB in 2010. I became the Vice President of the club in 2011. I thoroughly enjoy playing at Westboro because of the friendly atmosphere and the depth of playing level. My favourite shot is a winning drop shot! I love the concept of winning points while utilizing the least amount of effort.
In 1985, I was introduced to badminton at the age of 10 by my parents, Bill and Simone. At that time, WBC was known as Dovercourt Badminton Club. My sister Jennifer also played at Dovercourt BC. Much of what I learned about badminton was taught to me by Dominic Soong, current head coach at Soong Badminton Academy, and former top ranked international doubles player.
I joined WBC in the year 1989, played doubles for Nepean High School and competed at OFSAA in 1993: St. Catharines and 1994: Toronto. In 1996, I played for the University of Waterloo varsity badminton team and also enjoyed my time as an executive member of the UW Badminton Club.
I enjoy playing at Westboro because the level of play is strong, the members are welcoming, and I have many awesome memories in this gym. My favourite shot is a winning jump smash!
As a social committee member, I am involved in helping organize fun activities that appeal to club members. Some of the memorable events that the club has done include lawn bowling, rock climbing, curling, aerial trekking, and of course the annual Christmas and year-end parties.
I first started playing badminton around 1990 and joined WBC in the year 2000. I enjoy playing at WBC because of the strong level of play while still having a fun atmosphere. My favourite shot is the backhand drop shot - crosscourt for extra style points!
I was introduced to badminton by my uncle in 1994. I have enjoyed it ever since. I played at a few clubs in India like the Indian Airlines Club and Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana in Bombay. I also played for my college team for 3 years and led it as a captain. Ever since I have played badminton at the recreational level.
I moved to Canada in 2005 and joined WBC that winter. I like WBC for its strong level and very social environment. I have had a great time at WBC. My favourite shot is the reverse cross-court drop shot!
