Project Example

Poster Presentation of Calculus Application

Introduction

This is a team assignment of three-students-team. Team members need to review the practical application of Limits and Derivatives in one of the scientific, technological, engineering, art and any other field, select three examples in one field. Then design a poster board to introduce these three applications. Poster presentation day is the last class day. The presentation will be graded by the instructor and all peers.

Objective

· Students will practice their knowledge of limits and derivatives to the real world.

· Students will explain and communicate mathematical knowledge with their peers.

· Students will build teamwork and collaboration skills as they work together to meet assignment deadlines and produce a poster board.

· Students will get the skill of delivering a clear and well-organized poster presentation.

Main Guideline

1. Decide the team members before the end of the first week. Strongly recommend members from different departments, considering we have many different students in our section. One of the members should send an email to the instructor (wpang@worcester.edu) by the 11:59pm on Sunday and also forward to all members.

2. Review the news, reports, interviews, documentaries and related material about the application of Calculus in the real world. Decide one field from Science, Technology, Engineer, Art and any other field by the end of the third week. Please send the decided topic to the instructor (wpang@worcester.edu) by the 11:59pm on Sunday and forward to all members.

3. Do more literature reviewing and select three applications. Summary the brief background, necessary Calculus knowledge and meaning for each application. Based on the information, design and finish the poster before the last course day (Presentation day). Send the electronic copy of the poster, Members Contributions and group evaluation to the instructor (wpang@worcester.edu) by the11:59pm.

4. Each team members need to listen to all other groups’ presentation. After the group discussion, each team gives one score in the Rubric for each presentation. The instructor also gives a score for each group. The final score will be the weighted average of all scores.

Grading

The poster presentation will be graded by the instructor and all students. The score of the project will be the weight average of all scores.

The score of the project = 50% * instructor’s score + 50% * the average score of all other teams

The points of this project will be 10% of final grade.

Please see the Rubric for details of the grading
