Scooter

Scooter is a very sick 16 year old cat with breathing problems, mucous and saliva dripping from his mouth, but no fever. He looks like he's dying.
He is owned by a friend of mine, Shirley.
I understand his weight the evening of Jan 18, 2011 was 6.92 Kg, taken at the vets. He was prescribed appetite stimulant, steroid, antibiotic, dewormer, eye gel, and a bronchial drug.

7:00PM Jan 19, 2011 Picked him up from Shirley and Douglas.
I put him in a warm room with food and water. He did not eat or drink on his own. I syringed in some water, he drank half and choked and drooled out the rest.
He has never been tested for FIV/FELV.
Plan to call in Cindy as an advisor.
This is s much better environment than a steel cage at the vets.

He did not eat and only had a tiny bit of water. I was up every 2 hours all night to check up on him.
He is still quite strong!
9:00AM Jan 20, 2011 Gave Scooter his liquid antibiotic at 9AM and his eye gell and syringed water. He has had no food yet and does not drink water on his own. He drools less than yesterday night.

11:45AM Jan 20, 2011 Clipped front nails and gave him a few cc's of canned food by syringe. He swallowed it.
2:00PM Jan 20, 2011 Sub-q fluids. Al O'Connor gave us the ride to the vets. Thanks Al.
3:30PM Jan 20, 2011 Gave him an appetite stimulant pill. He swallowed most of it.
3:45PM Jan 20, 2011 He vomited out most of the pill and most of the food I've been feeding him.
7:00PM Jan 20, 2011 A bit early but I'm going to give him the antibiotic. If he spits it up I can give him more later...A few minutes later. He did not keep down the antibiotic.

4:00AM Jan 21, 2011 Scooter is lying down of the heating vent. He likes the warm air. He is not eating food.
6:45AM Jan 21, 2011 Gave Scooter eye gell. His eyes are clearing up. He is still not eating or drinking.
8:20AM Jan 21, 2011 Gave him antibiotic and food. He spit out most of it. His weight is 6.71 Kg, a bit up from yesterday because of the sub-q fluids.
10:45AM Jan 21, 2011 Scooter was given his steroid and he swallowed it. He rejected most of the food. His breathing was between 24 and 27 per minute, resting.
6:00PM Jan 21, 2011 Scooter drank tuna water from Shirley! A while alter... eye gell time.

12:00AM-6:00AM Jan 22, 2011 Checked on Scooter. He used the litterbox. A small amount of urine.
6:15AM Jan 22, 2011 Gave im some food. He did not swallow most of it. Also gave antibiotic. Same thing.
9:50AM Jan 22, 2011 Douglas and I gave him the steroid! He swallowed it!
10:00AM Jan 22, 2011 He weighs 6.55Kg
2:00PM Jan 22, 2011 Scooter has renal failure according to the blood tests. He does NOT have FIV or FELV! This is good news for Squirt who will therefore not have it either.
3:45PM Jan 22, 2011 Cindy advised me that I should turn down the heat in Scooter's room to increase his retention of water.
4:30PM Jan 22, 2011 I noticed that Scooter used the litterbox again! If he can function this clearly then his pain level must be small if he is in any pain at all. The steroid has fixed his breathing problems.

3:00AM Jan 23, 2011 I went to check on him and I saw he has eaten the tablespoon of a fish flavoured food I left out last night. He is in less pain than ever if he could do this!
7:30AM Jan 23, 2011 He is lying quietly, breathing OK. The steroid will not be needed today.
10:30AM Jan 23, 2011 Scooter was walking with his head up! This is the first time I've seen him like this.
11:30AM Jan 23, 2011 Scooter is walking and sniffing at his food. I brushed under his chin where it was messed up a couple of days back by the forcefeeding. He looks very handsome again. Gave him eye gell.
3:30PM Scooter is eating, grooming himself and his weight is up to 6.78Kg which means he must be drinking water as well as eating some food. Shirley has decided not to euthanize him today, because he is acting like a healthy cat. I'm happy about this decision.

3:00AM Jan 24, 2011 Scooter is OK. He ate crunchy treats I had let out for him. His breathing is a tiny bit congested, but not much.
8:00AM Jan 24, 2011 He used the litterbox overnight and ate a teaspoon or so of wet food. Still no bowel movement. Will administer the eye gell.
9:30AM Jan 24, 2011 Weighed Scooter. He weigs 6.83Kg and this means he has gained back most of his weight loss.
11:00AM Jan 24, 2011 Gave Scooter his steroid and he swallowed it all. Overall today he has less energy but is not in any pain.
2:00PM Jan 24, 2011 Scooter has eaten all the treats I put out and also some regular food. His breathing is still a bit congested. In all this time from at least Jan 19, 2011 when he came here he has not had a bowel movement.
5:00PM Jan 24, 2011 Shirley had a nice visit and Scooter was playful.
7:00PM Jan 24, 2011 Gave Scooter more eye gell. I think this problem is almost fixed.
11:45PM Jan 24, 2011 He had a bowel movement! A normal sized one.

5:30AM Jan 25, 2011 He had another, smaller bowel movement. The water bowl is almost empty. He has been drinking and eating his food.
10:00AM Jan 25, 2011 Gave him his steroid and weighed him. He's at 7.06Kg!!
2:00PM Jan 25, 2011 Scooter seems well although he has eaten little today. He enjoyed some Preventive formula, the same as my Cinder and Spring eat. He seems happy that the room is cleaner thanks to Douglas and myself.
4:00PM Jan 25, 2011 He got his eye gell and ate some chicken & gravy food when Shirley visited. Shirley bought an assortment of foods for him, a large variety, so that he doesn't get tired of the same thing.

5:00AM Jan 26, 2011 Most of the dry food is gone as well as some fish food.
7:00AM Jan 26, 2011 Gave him eye gell and noticed he is drinking a lot of water.

9:45AM Jan 26, 2011 Gave him his steroid. He has a wheezing sound when he breathes. i might start him on the bronchial dilator.
4:30PM Jan 26, 2011 Shirley said the wheezing was a chronic condition. Scooter likes the Rocky Mountain canned food.

3:00AM Jan 27, 2011 Scooter upset his water dish. From now on he gets the heavy ones. A lot of the Preventive food is missing.
9:00AM Jan 27, 2011 He weighs 7.18 kilos and I'm giving him eye gell and his steroid.

3:45PM Jan 27, 2011 He ate a bit of the Preventive dry food but not much of the chicken flake food from the little can.

9:45AM Jan 29, 2011 Will give him steroids and weigh him. He's 6.93Kg, a good drop from yesterday.

2:00PM Jan 30, 2011 Gave Scooter the steroid and for the first time the bronchial dilator. Shirley thought his breathing was a bit rough. His weight is 6.83Kg.
3:00PM Jan 30, 2011 He has had no bad reaction to the bronchial dilator.
6:45PM Jan 30, 2011 Scooter had a bowel movement. This is getting to be a daily pattern!

3:00AM Jan 31, 2011 Scooter's breathing is wheezy again. He has eaten some food.
9:00AM Jan 31, 2011 He had a bowel movement which is good. The bad thing is, his weight is down to 6.68Kg.
12:30PM Jan 31, 2011 Gave Scooter the bronchial dilator.
4:30PM Jan 31, 2011 Gave him the appetite stimulant pill, Mertazapine. Half an hour later he foamed at the mouth. It's safe to say this is a bad pill. When Shirley visited a bit later he played a lot, so maybe overexertion had something to do with his relapse.

7:00AM Feb 1, 2011 He used the litterbox and is not dripping saliva or foaming. He ate a teaspoon only of food. He has had a tiny bowel movement.
10:00AM Feb 1, 2011 I gave Scooter some more canned food and his steroid, which he now gets every odd day of the month until it runs out.
12:00PM Feb 1, 2011 Scooter weighs only 6.59Kg.
1:00PM Feb 1, 2011 Giving him the bronchial dilator.
4:45PM Feb 1, 2011 Gave Scooter a half tablet of his new appetite stimulant pill. Hope this one works.

7:00AM Feb 2, 2011 Gave him his appetite pill and steroid. He has still eaten little to nothing and will be forcefed later in the day.
9:00AM Feb 2, 2011 Small bowel movement. Very small.

1:00PM Feb 2, 2011 Forcefed Scooter. He swallowed most of it, maybe 1 1/2 ounces.
2:00PM Feb 2, 2011 Gave him a bronchial dilator.
3:45PM Feb 2, 2011 Gave him his appetite pill a bit early because I didn't see any sign that the pill in the morning helped.
4:30PM Feb 2, 2011 More forcefeeding.

8:30AM Feb 3, 2011 He ate nothing last night.
9:00AM Feb 3, 2011 Gave him his appetite pill. His eyes look good.
10:00AM Feb 3, 2011 Gave him his bronchial dilator. His breathing is wheezy. It almost sounds like he has water in the lungs.
11:00AM Feb 3, 2011 He weighs 6.43Kg and looks a bit dehydrated. He rejected the forcefeeding and drooled a lot afterwards. I'm giving him chicken broth once in a while and he doesn't spit it out.
5:30PM Feb 3, 2011 Gave him steroids. His breathing is quite laboured and Shirley may have him euthanized soon.

5:00AM Feb 4, 2011 Scooter vomited up some fluid. It could be the broth I gave him yesterday.
10:30AM Feb 4, 2011 Gave Scooter his steroid. I do not intend to weigh him today as this could be stressful. I am giving him periodically water and broth. Poor boy!
3:00PM Feb 4, 2011 Still giving him broth every hour, a couple of cc's. He swallows most of it, but he is very sick. As long as he is lying still he does not seem to be in distress.
5:30PM Feb 4, 2011 Shirley visited for half an hour. Scooter picked up a bit and was not in distress or pain. The broth helped him a bit, but his kidneys are failing and his organs are shutting down. To spare him pain, it's almost certain he will be euthanized tomorrow.

12:00AM-6:00AM Feb 5, 2011 Woke periodically to give Scooter broth.
6:00AM Feb 5, 2011 His breathing is heavier and I gave him fluids all night. I woke up every second hour.
9:40AM Feb 5, 2011 Scooter will die in under an hour. I'm taking some last pictures. He is very tidy, using his litterbox right to the end!
11:00AM Feb 5, 2011 Scooter was euthanized. He died quickly and with no pain. The second to bottom picture in the Attachments section is Shirley holding him.
