There is much suffering caused in this world due to either some people not believing in the inherent worth and dignity of all human beings or some of us not remembering it all the time. In a country becoming increasingly diverse in every way, we need periodic affirmation of this critical foundation of our democracy. For some people, this is like a dietary supplement. For others, this is like essential medicine. We gather not only to remind ourselves of the truth that we all belong without exceptions but also to celebrate the beautiful diversity of humanity through music, food and fun.
Public witness events are occasions such as rallies and worship services when people of different denominations and religions gather to affirm our common faith in justice and equality.
True, the majority of our participants already believe that we all belong. However, these events recharge our batteries, renew our faith in humanity and send us forth to do the good work of justice and equality. Also, sometimes the "choir" need the affirmation of realizing how large it is.
If it's a rally, please wear weather-appropriate clothing. If it's an indoor event, we follow customs of our hosts. For example, in a synagogue, we may be expected to wear a yarmulke.
We oppose injustice and stand up for the rights of others. We are a non-violent community. We may express what Mahatma Gandhi called "satyagraha" (righteous anger) but we do it in love.
