Week of 9/14-9/20
We are not traveling off-campus for any required practices during this school week. However, I would like to travel off-site the following week as we have in the past. Please let me know if you are not comfortable with your daughter leaving campus for practice. The sites we go to are very close to the school (Dick Woods Road "Couch" is 3.4, Miller School is 3.5 miles away, and Mint Springs Farm is 3.2 miles away).
The reason I like to have the girls run at places other than WAHS is threefold:
To get them on softer surfaces for distance runs (hence Dick Woods Road). This helps prevent injuries.
To get in some good training on grass that has some hills (hence Mint Springs Farm/ Miller School) as the majority of their races are on grass.
To provide variety to their runs.
However, if parents aren't comfortable or with having practice off-campus, please let me know. We can always stay and run all season at WAHS / Henley if need be. I'm just trying to make XC as enjoyable and beneficial as possible for the girls!
Monday 9/14: Practice @ WAHS 4-6pm. Meet in gym for bands / abs. Tempo / speed mix.
Tuesday 9/15: TUESDAY TREAT DAY! Practice @ WAHS 4-6pm. Meet in gym for bands / abs. Medium recovery run (not just pre-race) + strides in run. Girls running longer will start right at 4:25. New: We now have the weight room reserved Tuesday and Thursdays 5:15-5:45, so we will meet there after our run at 5:15 sharp.
Wednesday 9/16: MID-WEEK MEET @ McIntire Park (NOT DARDEN TOWE!!)
There will be a bus taking the runners to the race. Release time coming ASAP. Please let me know TODAY or TOMORROW (by Sunday night) if your daughter will need a ride back to WAHS. The bus may depart if there aren't runners that need to ride it.
Participating Schools: CHS, Fluvanna, Western Albemarle, Louisa
Please note that the meet will be held at the new CHS Cross Country course in McIntire Park. Buses will drop visiting teams off at the base of the pedestrian bridge on the YMCA side of the park. Limited handicap parking will be available at the Charlottesville Skate Park lot near the bridge. Spectator Parking will be available in the YMCA lot and at Charlottesville High School (a pedestrian Path connects CHS with McIntire Park - expect a 10-minute walk from the CHS lots to the course).
Girls: Be prepared to do a LONGER warm-up and cool down. This is going to be a higher mileage day for everyone as we won't be able to have our normal long run on the weekend due to RVA Relays.
Time Schedule:
5:00 pm: Girls race (runners TBD)
5:30 pm: Boys race
6:00 pm: Combined Boys/Girls JV races (all other runners, including 8th Graders)
Thursday 9/17: Practice @ WAHS 4-6pm. Meet in gym for bands / abs. Medium recovery run + weight room 5:15-5:45.
Friday: 7:25 am practice (no weight room).
Saturday: RVA RELAYS!!!
This is perhaps the most fun meet of the season! It starts in the evening and our last races starts in the DARK at 8:50. We will have glow-sticks, light-up hair stuff, glow-in-the-dark face paint, etc.
The meet takes place at Pole Green Park in Richmond. There is no bus to this meet. I had the school provide a bus in the past: only 5 girls rode it down to the meet, and I was the only one that rode it on the way back. Please reach out if you need help with transportation. There are so many families on this team that can help out. Reach out EARLY rather than later and we can find you a ride.

The CHS McIntire Park Cross Country Course consists of a start and finish straightaway, an inner loop, and an outer loop. After the start, athletes will run the inner loop and the outer loop twice, then run the inner loop a final time before entering the finish straightaway. NOTE: on the first inner loop only, athletes will run counterclockwise (i.e., reversing the direction of the first loop). On the final two inner loops, athletes will run clockwise. Both outer loops are counterclockwise.
1 Upcoming FUN VOLUNTEER Event:
SIGN UP HERE!
Click THIS LINK to sign-up as a volunteer with the Loop De'ville.
Below is information about an upcoming volunteer opportunity during the Loop De'Ville event in Charlottesville on Sunday, September 27. This is a one day Trail Festival in which participants walk, run, or bike the entire 20 mile loop of the Rivanna Trail, which runs all the way around Charlottesville. Every 3-4 miles there are aid stations, and I am in charge of the one near my house in Fry's Spring at Azalea Park. We spend the day providing food, drink, and encouragement to the hundreds of people making their way along the trail from 9:45-5pm. I'll have plenty of food and a speaker playing music the whole time. Your job will be to CHEER, DANCE, hand out water / gatorade, reassure them that they will make it, etc. We will even have temporary tattoos and glitter! It is really fun!
This is a great way to get volunteer hours for civics or NHS, and to just give back to the community as well (and help out your XC Coach!) You can come for a short as two hours or as long as you want. Also, you get a T-SHIRT!
Below is the volunteer form to fill out. It will ask you for your name, email, and phone number (only to contact you with your volunteer information). Then it will ask you how you will want to help out: scroll down and click on Cheer Zone Support. It will then ask you for your T-Shirt size, and which shift you can work. Then it will ask you "Do you want to join or create a team". Click "Join an existing team" and scroll down and select "Pugh Crew". That's it!
Thank you!
