This is an elective class for students in Science Olympiad, FIRST Robotics, Science Seminar, MST Magnet JIT course, MST Magnet project extensions beyond 90 hours, or the like. Register with Ron Wright during spring forecasting or during September of the new school year. This is a different class than "Research Seminar" for the MST magnet program. If you are registered for Science Olympiad you will automaticaly be placed in this class - I do this to keep track of your hours.
Attendance:
Students enrolled need to check in bi-weekly. Bring your activity log. My best time is duirng your lunch on Fridays . I am available all three lunches in room 707. I am also available after 2:15 Thursdays. You may also check in with Mrs. Dean, available most days after shool. Students who miss a check-in, and the subsequent maike-up meeting may be dropped from the course. Students in the course must maintain an active email account for communications. You must also attend 80% of the team and club meetings or keep your coach informed when you miss. Please complete the SO Credit Contract and bring it to your first check-in.
Credit:
For a .5 credit you must document 90+ hours of course work beyond any work for any other class or senior project. Team meetings, study parties, competitions individual (supervised) study, preparation or building, and study with coaches ... all count. Keep good documentation with the log sheet, make sure to get your verifying signatures as you do the activities. I will keep the log of your hours in Skyward for those events I am present at, and from time to time, will record your logsheet hours into Skyward. If you are unsure whether an activity will qualify, please email me with a description of the activity a few days ahead of time.
The course may be repeated for a .5 credit each school year the student is enrolled in Science Seminar at CHS. .
Grade:
To earn an "A" you must earn a medal at the Regional or State Tournament in an event that has 10 or more teams competing. Sometimes Trial Events count, sometimes not. You can also earn an "A" by medaling at a Invitational Tournament in one or more events AND by having your averge score for your best three events at Regional be at least as good as the average score for the lowest-qualifying team for State.
To earn a "B" you must earn a medal at an Invitational, Regional or State Tournament, do your best at all tournaments you attend, and do at least three events at the Regional Tournament. - OR - document 90+ hours of study time as noted above, and medal in an invitational tournament.
No grade lower than "B" will be awarded.
Procedure for Transcript: Turn in your logsheets no later than May 8th. I will determine your grade and tell you. If you want it recorded on your transcript I will forward your grade and credit earned to your counselor. If you don't want it on your transcript I will not forward your grade and no mention of the course will appear on your transcript.
