Anyone who went to the field to collect data knows how much time, resources and sweat are necessary to gather high quality data and produce a good dataset even for a single community. Now think about every single dataset compiled in a large dataset and this may give you an idea of the remarkable efforts of many researchers who - despite dedicating substantial part of their lifes collecting data for their own projects - are also willing to freely share their data. This allows other researchers to benefit from the data and advance their careers and also usually represent the starting point in macroscale analyses. Thus, please make explicit reference to the original sources of data in your work. It is the very least you can do to fairly acknowledge these people.
