Course Description:
This class has been designed for students who are interested in learning about the beauty and function of architecture from throughout history. Students who elect to take this class should sincerely have an interest in architecture and be willing to approach it from both an artistic and an engineering standpoint. There will be hands-on building and drawing projects, but some writing assignments and tests as well.
Total Grade:
80% Projects 20% Tests
Most projects will be graded via a rubric in these five general categories: concept and design, craftsmanship, project completion, inventiveness, and knowledge of the elements and principles of art. Most projects are based out of 25 points. After a student receives a graded test, they can earn half-points back if they do corrections using their notes in the time allotted. This does not include extra credit questions.
Units of Study:
Google Classroom Details:
The Google Classroom for this class will be used to communicate with you and supplement in class instruction on virtual days. I plan to give you your assignments and supplies before you leave school for your virtual days, but I will likely also put presentations, videos and instructions from the in person days in Classroom for you to review when you are home. I do not plan on doing any new instruction in Classroom unless we run out of time during our in person days. I will be clear about this with you and will never sneak something onto Classroom to see if you are paying attention.
Communication:
If you have questions or need assistance on your virtual days, please email me or message me in Classroom. I will respond as quickly as I can. My prep time is during 3B so I will try to respond to you then or after 2:30pm. Sometimes I need to attend meetings before and after school and during my prep time, but, again, I will respond to you as quickly as I can. Also, feel free to call me in the classroom on most Wednesdays when both groups are virtual.
Zoom:
At this time, I do not plan on doing any live teaching via Zoom. There is no time to do it when I have students in class in person and it would be difficult to do it with all my classes on Wednesday. If you would really like to do a Zoom call on Wednesdays or after 2:30pm on other days, let me know.
Hybrid Schedule Late Work Policy:
This kind of schedule requires you to be highly responsible for remembering to bring back or take home your projects and supplies. Since you will be moving back and forth between home and school to work on your projects, I expect that you might forget something once in a while. I will give you two free “I forgot’s” but after that I will take a half point off for each day it is late. I will also take a half point off for each day you do not have your project at school to work on. Our time together is precious and it is important that you work on your project when we are together. If you are home and you forgot to turn in your project at school, I expect you to send me a photo as soon as possible, but you will still be required to turn in your project at school. I will subtract half a point for each day your project is late (meaning that you haven’t sent me a photo or turned it in at school.)
All projects must be turned in (usually on the table behind my desk) and not just left on a shelf, at home, on the bus, in the car… I will give partial credit for work that is turned in but not completed. I will give a zero for a project that was not begun, was barely begun, or does not meet the goals I set for the assignment.
Absences:
If you are sick, stay home! It is an excused absence so I will not take points off for a project being late. Usually, if you are excused sick two days, you would get two additional days to complete a project, but that does not really work with the hybrid schedule (although I will accept photos to turn in projects from home.) We will find a way for you to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. I feel that more than two weeks late would be too much. Also, you will still be expected to turn in all other assignments that come after your excused sick days on the assigned due dates.
School Closure:
If our district closes and we go 100% virtual, all instruction will be found on Google Classroom and we will do occasional Zoom meetings which I will give you plenty of notice about. I will put together kits of supplies for you that I will expect you to come to school to pick up since you will likely need to pick up other items at school as well.
