From realtors, to inspectors, to photographers, drones are helping document the world. In the local government context, drones have helped firefighters, helped find missing persons, and fostered an entire industry of innovators and entrepreneurs. However, along with opportunity come concerns for local governments. While drones are a useful tool for local governments in their own operations, we also must understand the federal licensing and operational regulations that we must follow if we use them.
Drones also raise safety, privacy, nuisance and trespassing concerns. These concerns are compounded by the lack of accountability associated with most drone operations. This session will provide insight into the federal rules relating to drone operation, as well as offering suggestions for how local governments can craft their own drone ordinances to encourage innovation while also protecting their residents.
