Call for papers

The VIII EMEP - EMEP World Conference on Teaching Portuguese (#VIIIEMEP) will be held on the 9th and 10th of August, 2019 at Princeton University, New Jersey. The Meeting is organized by the AOTP - American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese, a non-profit organization that works since 2007 to promoting excellence in the teaching of Portuguese as a world language. The EMEP brings together teachers, translators, and researchers of Portuguese as a foreign language, second language acquisition, heritage language, and native language; from pre-school to post-university education; from the public, private and community schools.

For the eighth edition of the meeting, presentations on the following topics will be welcomed:

• Best practices in the development of Portuguese programs;

• Methodologies and approaches to success in language teaching;

• Strategies for the development of interactive and communicative activities;

• The place of grammar teaching in task-focused instruction;

• Effective productive feedback for different learning styles;

• Planning of classes that stimulate the engagement of students with diverse profiles;

• The use of information and communication technologies in Portuguese class;

• The integration of cultural understanding and intercultural competence;

• Promotion of learner empowerment and autonomy;

• The skills required by the current translator and professional practices;

• Proficiency certificates and the internationalization of the Portuguese language.

These are the modalities of presentation in the VIII EMEP:

Individual presentation of an article - duration of 20 minutes;

Workshop with up to two participants - duration of 45 minutes;

Roundtable with up to four participants - duration of 90 minutes;

The abstracts of the proposals must contain a description of the research, the strategies used for its elaboration, and the results achieved, in a maximum of 1500 characters (about 300 words). Attention to the norms of submission of proposals:

- Participants can appear in the program at most twice, one as moderators and another presenting only one work;

- The roundtables can have up to four members, only two of them can be from the same institution. In this case, the organizer of the table is responsible for submitting the information regarding all members of the table;

- In no case it is allowed to submit previously presented or published work;

In addition to presentations, the VIII EMEP is also opened to new Portuguese language teaching materials (books, videos, software, etc.). To present your material or include it in the program of the event, send an email with a brief description to info@emepsite.com.

Important dates:

Last day to send proposals - February 1, 2019

Submission of confirmation of abstract acceptance - March 15, 2019

Deadline for approved authors to register for the conference - April 15, 2019

Presentation of the final program - May 15, 2019

Last day for attends to enrollment in the VIII EMEP (members in good standing must enroll in the form provided above) - July 20, 2019

Investment:

Registration of non-AOTP members to present at the VIII EMEP - $100 (includes the association to AOTP, required for participation in the Meeting)

Registration of AOTP Members in good standing to present at EMEP VIII - $60

Registration of non-AOTP members to attend the Meeting as listeners - $40 (includes the association to AOTP)

Cancellation and refund

All cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing by April 30, 2019 via email to info@emepsite.com. No refund will be granted after April 30, 2019. All refund requests will be subject to a processing fee of $40.00.
