Spring 2022 OSE seminar

Spring 2022: Optical Sciences and Engineering Advanced Lecture Series (PHYS500)

Instructor: Victor Acosta, vmacosta@unm.edu. Research group webpage

Syllabus: This website serves as your course syllabus.

Class meets: Thursdays, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, In person only (unless UNM COVID protocols change). Seminars will begin on time. Talks will take place in the colloquium room in the Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, PAIS 1100, unless otherwise noted. There will also be "special" lectures which will be held outside of the regularly scheduled class. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the "special" lectures, but attendance is not mandatory. The schedule is available on this webpage, but treat this information as tentative, as updates are not always entered in immediately. The course schedule will also be updated on the OSE website. Announcements and reminder emails will be sent to the talks@phys.unm.edu email list. If you are not yet on this list, please contact Leanne Yanabu, willow@unm.edu, to be added prior to the first class (Jan 20).

Overview: This lecture course will feature a series of talks focused on the latest research in the field of Optical Science and Engineering. The speakers will include world wide experts in the field of optics from academia, industry and the national labs, as well as UNM faculty. Anticipated learning outcomes include:

1. Students will be exposed to a wide range of topics relevant to photonics.

2. Students will have a formal venue to network with leading scientists in the field.

3. Students will learn (by example) how to deliver a coherent oral presentation.

Requisites: Students in all OSE programs are required to take two semesters of OSE seminar for credit. First-year OSE students are particularly encouraged to take the seminar course. Students from other disciplines are also welcome!

Textbook: None.

Final exam: None.

Grading: Registered students will receive a grade of CR in this 1.0 credit hours class when they have successfully attended 80% or more of the scheduled lectures. Attendance will be monitored each class via a sign-in sheet. To ensure that you get the most out of the class, successful attendance is defined as arriving by 11:05 am and staying for the full lecture.
