Before continuing on, I feel like we should get some more monster bait.
So Level 3 is where Level 2 was in the previous quest, and has to be opened via The Whistle.
Alright, we've got that awesome blue color, which is matched only by that dark green color for dungeon palettes.
Well, looks like we chose a good time to bring along more monster bait.
I mean, it's nice to feed the trolls and all, but is there a reason I can't stab him with Mr. Pointy?
He's just a Goriya after all; he shouldn't be hard to deliver unto a stabbity death.
Excellent, the blue boomerang.
Also, if you notice our map, you'll see we are making the letter L. Well, other than the fact that the dungeon shapes fit together as mentioned previously, a more obvious thing is that there are 5 dungeons in the second quest that spell out the letters Z E L D A. Level 2 was the A, and I believe the room that we got the whistle from was actually the hole in the center of the letter on the map.
This is a very interesting setup for a dungeon, as after you beat the boss and get the heart, you have to pass through a locked door instead of an automatically opening shuttered door.
And a room that is not the triforce room! Instead, we fight some wall masters, which is fine since the entrance is only a couple of rooms away. Interesting choice of not giving the compass to Lunk until after he beat the boss.
The entire existence of the two rooms on the far left of the dungeon are to provide an exit for the stairwell (just one of many, many stairwells in this quest), and a place to put the triforce room. Yet again, setting the puzzles, tone, and design choices apart from the first quest.
This dungeon is a tricky one to find. You have to burn the appropriate bush by being on the right side of the screen, but then go back around to the left to be able to enter.
Level 7.
And yet again another level of endless stairs that go everywhere and nowhere. These one-way stairs really grind my gears, too.
Another stairwell... Where does THIS one go!?
Ah yes, the red candle. Of course, having it beforehand would have made finding the entrance to Level 7 a bit easier, don't you think?
Another Manhandla. On the up side, mini-bosses should not respawn once you've killed them, unlike rooms full of random enemies.
And yet again, even more mini-bosses and even more stairwells... Great, just great.
I feel like the designers knew they were getting obnoxious with this, which may explain why Level 9 works the way it does. Either that, or they ran out of room to put any more freaking stairwells!
Remember when I said that I hate these rooms before?
Well guess what -- I still do.
And another of these bastards. Of course, to make things worse, the doors seal shut on you. If you wanted to leave, you could always stab him and let him kill you with fireballs or something. But fortunately, we have enough loose change to spare.
Just few enough blue darknuts to keep the game from experiencing slowdown. However, the floor pattern here makes fighting these guys a particular pain in the ass.
Well, actually, I think it is usually when they are coupled with fireball spitting statues that that happens, but anyway.
One last stairwell in this accursed dungeon!
And a four headed Gleeok to down for another heart piece. And fortunately the next dungeon should be much, much easier than this.
That's 7 out of 8 shards. Now we have to go beat Level 1.
At least Level 1 is still in the same place. And our flying slices of pizza are the same, too.
Well, this should be a cakewalk with the arsenal Lunk has now!
I suppose it's fitting we're actually going to do the first dungeon last.
Fortunately picking up the yellow boomerang does not overwrite the blue (magical) one.
That's right... To get to the boss and skip half the level, from the entrance you either go up a room or right a room, and then bomb your way into this stairwell room.
And you have to bomb your way into the boss chamber to fight Yoshi-like Aquamentus. Bombs are damned handy to have in Level 1, in both quests. Helps you skip quite a few rooms.
And the last triforce shard is now ours!
And one last stop at the gambling house and some red medicine, and we are ready to head on.
Alright, the only think we don't have is more monster bait, but where we're going it won't be needed.
And to aid us in our travels to Level 9, we take the warp whistle and then make use of the warp stairs.
Okay, now that we have all 8 shards, we should be able to get past the old man (who apparently speaks broken English) just inside the entrance...
Alright Ganon, let the games begin!
