Venetian Time
An Examination of Time and Space in Venice
Project Abstract
This project was conducted to increase understanding of perceptions of time in Venice. Locations of clocks in Venice have been recorded and evaluated for implementation on veniceprojectcenter.org. The project involved evaluation of yearly and daily time cycles which use information collected by the Venice Project Center over its 25 years. Field work conducted established a pace of life for Venice in order to compare to other cities. This measurement was calculated to study correlations between pace of life and other community variables. The project involved creation of an isochrone map to show how tourists impact Venetians with regard to mobility.

General Overview
Although a clock moves at a constant rate, each tick, chime, or bell can be experienced in a wide variety of ways. These perceptions of time can be seen to differ between cultures, but explaining this phenomenon is no easy task. As stated by Henry Thoreau, "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer." Venice's culture creates its own unique perception of time- Venetian Time. Looking at time keepers in the city, characteristics of time, and travel time, will helped us to understand this perception of time in Venice more clearly.
Calle del Traghetto Vecchio Minich Clock
We surveyed time keepers in Venice by locating Minich clocks, clocks on bell towers, and bells that ring on intervals. This provided a great deal of data for use on various Venice Project Center websites such as veniceprojectcenter.org and bells.veniceprojectcenter.org.
We also looked into ways to characterize time. This included focusing on comparisons between Venice and other cities. We looked at walkability scores, calculated the Pace of Life in Venice, as well as compared daily and yearly time cycles.
The final objective of our project included looking at the impacts to Venetian travel time. We utilized isochrone maps in Venice to show the improved mobility provided by the ACTV boat lines. We have also quantified the impact tourists have on Venetian walking speeds. Below is visual depicting this impact. This portion of the project involved a series of visuals in order for our data to be easily viewed by the public.

Through our efforts, we hope to contribute to the general understanding of time through experiences and issues in Venice. We enjoyed our 7 weeks here in Venice, and are excited to share our experiences and findings with you.
