Yesterday, we finally made our way up to the top of a bell tower for the first time all term! As we approached the top of the San Geremia bell tower, the difficulties of past teams became clear to us. Mechanisms of the the bells left little room to capture pictures of the bells and scaffolding and screens made it difficult to get clear panoramic pictures from all sides of the bell towers. However, we came prepared with several recording devices and were able to effectively and accurately record the data that we were looking for. In all, we were able to collect panoramic views from the bell towers, 360 degree captures of each bell, sound recordings of each bell, and many more technical details.
In the meantime, we have been spending most of our time finalizing console data as well as trying to fix the GIS maps so that everything falls within the correct coordinates. Lauren and Ian spent time yesterday finalizing data with Ben and the final kinks with the convent data are almost all sorted out. The maps on the other hand are a different story. The church floors are all of by a certain projection and i have been spending time to try and fix those so that church floors aren't floating around in the ocean on a map. The more difficult projection we are dealing with is the bell towers. Where the church floors have an arbitrary wrong projection, the bell towers seem to be randomly misplaced. Since the projections are all different, it is taking more time to go through each bell tower individually and correct the location of each.
Although we are running into a few problems, we are not being delayed by any huge mishaps. We are moving right along looking toward the end of the term. It is crunch time now, since we only have 17 days left in Venice and until the end of the term!
Until next Post,
Bells Team
