2020 Ultrathon

Description: USIG invited schools in the southeast to compete in an educational ultrasound competition.

Central/Peripheral Line Placement

Description: USIG was honored to have ER physician- Dr. Clay Carter- demonstrate line placements using ultrasound.

Physician Training

Description: For 2 days, the US facility is hosting a training seminar for physicians interested in learning how to use ultrasound proficiently. Physicians have come from ALL OVER the nation to learn from our incredible US faculty. USIG members were thrilled to also observe/learn by volunteering as Standardized Patients.

M1 Orientation Week

Description: We were happy to welcome the new M1 class during their orientation week and teach them a little bit about the benefits of ultrasound.

Adventures in Medicine

Description: University of South Carolina School of Medicine was happy to host a week long camp for rising middle/high schoolers. They had a blast performing scans in the same labs and with the same doctors as our medical students!

Meeting with visitors from Paris (May 2019)

Description: USIG leaders had the pleasure of meeting with faculty members from a medical school in Paris, France. We discussed our ultrasound curriculum and the importance of ultrasound in medical education.

American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Conference (April 2019)

Description: A select group of students were able to travel to Orlando, FL to attend the AIUM conference. They learned more about ultrasound and competed in the Sonoslam competition.

Ultrasound Competition (March 2019)

Description: Students from all programs came out to the US Institute to participate in our annual ultrasound competition! Challenges involved identifying structures on a scan, successfully completing simulation exercises, and even scanning blindfolded!

USIG & Peds IG Lunch Lecture (February 2019)

Description: We hosted Dr. Norton for a lunch lecture to discuss the application of ultrasound in pediatric patients and how it might differ from an adult patient.

USIG & IMIG Lunch Lecture (February 2019)

Description: We hosted Dr. Barron for a lunch lecture to discuss how he incorporates ultrasound into his internal medicine practice.

Meeting with Dr. Constantinos Zervides (January 2019)

Description: Our USIG leaders were fortunate enough to meet with Dr. Zervides visiting from the University of Nicosia Medical School in Nicosia, Cyprus. We talked about new developments in ultrasound and our favorite aspects of our ultrasound curriculum.

FAST Exam Workshop (Friday, November 2nd, 2018)

Description: The Ultrasound and Emergency Medicine Interest Groups are excited to welcome Dr. Casey Wilson for a workshop on the focused assessment with sonography in trauma (or FAST) exam. This is a rapid ultrasound-guided bedside exam to screen trauma patients for free blood in the chest and abdomen. Dr. Casey Wilson completed her EM residency and US fellowship at Johns Hopkins and is now an attending physician at Grand Strand Medical Center where she is active in clinical medicine and teaching residents.

Knee Injection Workshop (Thursday, October 25th, 2018)

Description: USIG and Orthopedic Sports Medicine Interest group are excited to host a Phantom Knee Injection with Dr. Bell. This will be a fun learning opportunity as we will be able to integrate our knowledge of knee anatomy in a dynamic way- with hands-on application of ultrasound!

Lunch Lecture- Pediatric Sports Medicine Ultrasound (Thursday, September 27th, 2018)

Description: Join USIG and Peds IG during lunch to hear from Pediatric Sports Medicine Ultrasound extraordinaire, Dr. Holloway. He currently serves as a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

USIG is excited to announce the first USC SOM Ultrasound Competition! You’ve been training for this for your entire medical career, so it’s time to show your stuff! Join us for scans, trivia questions and prizes!

Ultrasound Guided Procedures (Friday, April 13th, 2018)

Description: USIG, IMIG, and the Cardiology Interest Group are excited to announce that we will be hosting a lunch presentation from Dr. Chris Huffman. Dr. Huffman is an Interventional Cardiologist with Providence Heart in Columbia. He will be discussing the utility of ultrasound, as well as other diagnostic tests, in his daily practice.

FAST Exam (Monday, March 23rd, 2018)

Description: EMIG and USIG will be hosting an ultrasound lab with Dr. Brent Boyer, an Emergency Medicine Ultrasound fellow at Palmetto Health. Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) is a point-of-care ultrasound examination performed at the time of presentation of a trauma patient.

Ultrasound and Neurology Workshop (Friday, February 23rd, 2018)

Description: Come get hands on experience with ultrasound in neurology.

Ultrasound Guided Procedures (Friday, Febuary 2nd, 2018)

Description: Students will be working with ultrasound faculty to learn and practice ultrasound guided procedures (ie. central lines, paracentesis, and knee joint aspiration) on phantoms that simulate real patients.

Ultrasound and Neurology Lunch (Monday, Oct. 16, 2017)

Description: Come listen to Dr. Souvik Sen, Chair of Clinical Neurology at Palmetto Health-USC Neurology, as he shares his journey to neurology, his research and how he uses ultrasound in the Neurology Clinic along with the Student Interest Group for Neurology.

Knee Injection Workshop (Friday, Oct. 13th, 2017)

Description: Learn how to perform ultrasound guided knee injections at the US Institute through a hands on phantom knee injection workshop led by Dr. Tripp Bell, Chair of Radiology, and Dr. Keith Barron, Internal Medicine Specialist.

Ultrasound in Internal Medicine Lunch (Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017)

Description: Come listen to Dr. Michael Wagner as he shares how he uses Ultrasound to diagnose patients in Internal Medicine. Dr. Wagner is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine here at the SOM and a leader in ultrasound education.

Spring 2017

Description: USIG Members (Sam Scoma, Jane Lim, Jordan Ohlsson and Miles Reese) participated in a worldwide Hackathon hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), which focused on creating an open, free ultrasound educational piece to be placed in a larger collection of ultrasound education for others around the world.

Wrist Workshop (February 2017)
