Summary:
Chapter 11:
Holden wanders in the hall, he reminisces about Jane at his summerhouse in Maine:
. You are also told that Jane is the only person Holden has showed the baseball mitt to. This is the only indication of trust Holden displays throughout the novel.
. One day as Jane & Holden are playing checkers. Not to forget the same object appearing; the checker pieces. Janes' towers.
. Holden asks Jane for cigarettes (trigger word for domestic violence). Causes Jane to refuse to answer him.
Holden then leaves the checkers game, which makes Jane cry. Holden comforts her, holds her and kisses her.
.The only thing he knew for sure, was when he held her hand, he was that he was happy. As soon as this thought comes to his mind, he then feels ill. AKA alone.
Chapter 12:
. He goes on a cab. And still asks about the ducks at Central Park Lagoon. The driver tells him that the fish are all right and mother nature will take care of all.
.Holden goes to a bar; Ernies. The couple besides him are talking about a child at a school, committing suicide
---
James Castle. James Castle was one of Holdens class mates at Elkton Hills. Killed himself by jumping out a window, instead of taking back what he said to another student, who had sent bullies after James.

Class Discussion:
Jane Gallagher’s stepfather is an alcoholic, he is maybe abusive in a verbal or a sexual way. Holden is protective of Jane, maybe because she has a hard time protecting herself. He is some sort of “Watch tower”.
The ducks symbolizes himself and his situation, moving to a lot of different schools. The duck is half in the water and half out of the water, the same as Holden.
The taxi driver isn’t a phoney, Holden can relate the taxi driver to himself(?).
