National Council for the Social Studies
The National Council for the Social Studies is the largest social studies advocacy group in the country. They published a revised national curriculum in 2010. The National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: A Framework for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment are organized around ten themes. Although the Virginia elementary standards are not fully aligned with them, they can be helpful to keep your instruction focused on the larger picture of social studies.
The NCSS has an elementary position statement worth reading and understanding.
Powerful and Purposeful Teaching and Learning in Elementary School Social Studies - Makes the case for providing students the opportunity to build foundational knowledge and begin to grapple with our complex world.
The NCSS published The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards in 2016. The C3 Framework, like the Common Core State Standards, emphasizes the acquisition and application of knowledge to prepare students for college, career, and civic life. It intentionally envisions social studies instruction as an inquiry arc of interlocking and mutually reinforcing elements that speak to the intersection of ideas and learners.
