Applying Coding

The next step is to have students reflect on the coding skills that theyhave recently been acquiring and apply them to a product or project. Students need to be able to complete a STEM Challenge or complete a Design process to demonstrate their level of understanding of coding. The key to coding is to integrate their skill into other content areas of their learning. For example, a student might use their coding skills in Scratch to showcase persuasive writing in ELA by creating an advertisement. Integrate coding into cross-curricular learning rather than learning coding as a stand alone class is essential. The following are some planning resources that can be used to help students plan a coding project.

The following are more examples of planning templates that can be used with students. The templates model design processes such as The Engineering Process, Phases of Inquiry, Phases of Creativity.
