Phase-I course Requirements
Phase-I course Requirements
Lets start with a definition.
Definition: Let x \in {BMS, FU, HU, TU}. By a x-Basic (advance) course we mean a basic (advance) course defined by x's study regulation.
Example: Take x=BMS, a BMS-Basic course is any course given in the list of basic courses given on the BMS website. For different values of x, the correspond x-basic course may not intersect. For instant, Geometry I is a BMS-basic course but not FU-basic course.
Through out this page we fix x=BMS.
Phase I regulations according to the new regulations valid from April 2015:
As a Phase I student, you need to take:
5 basic courses, from at least 3 study areas of BMS,
one advance course of 4 hours a week, or two ones of 2 hours a week. These must not be seminars,
one seminar where you participate actively (write a report + give a presentation).
The average grade in these BMS courses must be at least “good” (that is, numerically, better than 2.5) . At least two of these 7 (or 8) courses need to be from the same study area of BMS, which is your field of concentration. The field of concentration has to be nominated for the Qualifying Exam.
Students who enter the BMS having already completed courses equivalent to one or more of the BMS Basic Courses in their home country or somewhere else can apply to have these count towards the course requirements above. However, those courses that have been used for credit for a previous degree cannot typically be applied for credit towards a master's degree in Berlin. So students who enter the BMS with an advanced background in mathematics can finish Phase I more quickly, since they have little remaining coursework.
The courses need to be chosen from the list on the BMS webpage. If you want to take other courses and acknowledge them as BMS courses, ask Nadja!
The BMS study regulations are available here.
The Master's regulations require to take more courses, and they differ from the BMS regulations.
Please keep both regulations in mind when you choose your courses!
The old Phase I course requirements are available on the official page. They are only applicable for students who entered the BMS before April 2015.
