Teach to Change the World Lesson
Plan and teach a lesson or series of lessons that involves a social justice issue, advocacy or activism. Create a lesson plan for one lesson.
Include the elements listed below in your lesson plan:
Establish goals and objectives for the lesson and identify state standard(s).
Lesson should include a good hook that will interest students and also activate/access any prior knowledge they already have.
Lesson plan should include the essential questions you want students to be able to answer and should anticipate and clarify, as much as possible, any misconceptions students might develop during the lesson.
Introduce key vocabulary students will need to know.
Lesson should include children’s literature (young adult literature), primary source materials, multi-media, simulations or creative drama to helping students understand the social justice issue(s).
Videotape the lesson and select between 7-10 minutes to share with us. As you watch the video, reflect on what went well and what could be improved. How did your students react to the lesson? Do you feel they understood the issue(s)? What might be some next steps for you and your students to take? Write a short reflection summarizing your ideas. Your choice of materials is not limited to those explored in the course. Please post your lesson plan and your reflection to your web page to share with your colleagues and bring your 7-10 minute video to share also.
My lesson plans consist of two different presentations, yet related to the theme of culturally relevant teaching and social equity.
Culturally Relevant Teaching: Honoring Student's Funds of Knowledge as Content and Context for Teaching (NMCTE Conference, October 30, 2010)
